Am I going to need to back up all my contacts, and other info before upgrading to 6.1?

Yes, you will need to back up & restore all of your contacts & other info. Upgrading your ROM will wipe out everything.

I use Sprite Backup normally to save ALL of my data but the version I have has problems re-installing everything to a new ROM. I just use a PIM backup to restore my contacts & then re-install my favorite programs!
