Are TomTom 7 Maps Customizable?

I've heard good things about TomTom 7, but I have a question regarding it's maps (more specifically the North America Canada and US maps). Are you able to only install parts of the map set?

I'm slightly limited by the size of my memory card on my touch (still using the stock 512MB card), and I remember the TomTom 6 Canada and US maps were almost 2GB in size.

With Garmin XT, you're able to only install whatever sections of the maps you need, is there a similar way to do this with TomTom?

Thanks in advance

North America map is around 1.8gb in size. You can get smaller sized U.S. maps based on your location in the U.S. they are around 100mb to 250mb in size.

The areas they offer are: Midwest, New England, Plains, South Central, South East, and Western Regions.

Here's more info regarding what states they cover: http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps/...guage=1&D=1089

Re: Are TomTom 7 Maps Customizable?

They don't divide Canada into its provinces for some reason. The New Enlgand region maps includes major roads of Ontario, but not every road. You'll have to get either US & Canada Map which is 900mb or Canada & Alaska Map which is 700mb. I would just purchase a larger SD card. You can find them cheap on Ebay. Every year I travel from Detriot through Windsor to Toronto down to Buffalo then to New York City. I recommend the U.S. & Canada map, its very detailed and upto date.

The Canada and Alaska map is 146mb and it's 60 bucks.

THe whole US and Canada map is 900mb and it's 70 bucks.

If I were you I'd spend 20 bucks, get a 4gig card and get the whole deal. Unless of course you plan on never visiting us Yanks!

Re: Are TomTom 7 Maps Customizable?

Got my 2GB MicroSD card today, haven't gotten the maps yet though

Anyone know of a way to run the program without maps installed? Evertime I run TomTom right now, I just get "No Maps Installed!" (with a "Voucher" button at the bottom that links to a 404 in Internet Explorer), but I seem to remember it still loading the aplication afterwards a while ago. I just want to browse arround the features and have a look, make sure it's worth it before I buy the maps.

Re: Are TomTom 7 Maps Customizable?

there's nothing to run without the maps. Imagine looking at a globe in a classroom, but it's completely blank with no markings whatsoever. That's equivalent of using TomTom without maps.

Re: Are TomTom 7 Maps Customizable?

I remember seeing map edit programs somewhere and thought I had one to add for you but I only have poi edit right now. Try a search for GPS Map Edit or TomTom Map Edit. I Know there was a program somewhere that converts Other formats to TomTom's format.
