I use Windows Movie Maker. Cut mp3 into 30 sec. and save as ringer. Then transfer to phone. Save to your sound folder on phone.

use wavpad as they must be in .wav form....cant use mp3 for email/text alerts

I've been using a program call Goldwave http://www.goldwave.com/ since the PPC 6600. You can copy any section of any song, make the volume louder, play the song in reverse or whatever you desire and save it as a ringtone or an alert. I usually save mine as a wma file because wav files tend to be to large. The program isn't free though

.mp3s will work on the touch pro as well as .wma and .wav. for editing use audacity (link below) its free

actually you can use MP3 files as alerts for texts / emails. you have to copy them to the /windows/ folder and they appear in the list for notifications.
