Sorry for a NB ? but, what is a ROM & Hard SPL

Sorry for a kinda a newbee question here but...

What is a ROM?

What is a Hard SPL

I often see the term ROM used when discussing a operating system so I guess it has something to do with that but could someone explain that a bit more.

As well I see people talking about a Hard SPL needed so that someone could do a upgrade but could someone explain it a bit more then that.

The term rom is in fact the operating system of the phone. We can install any official rom to the phone anytime we want but to install a custom rom we would need the hardspl. This hack allows us to install non official(custom) roms without breaking the device.

ROM... odd name to use, is it by any chance because it resides in the ROM memory of the device and is more like firmware like a BIOS?

Is that why you need a Hard SPL to hack it?

So the ROM can either be official or none official but the Hard SPL is going to have to be made by someone else?

I would assume that HARD SPL's are typically specific to given phones and operating systems too correct?

IE the Hard SPL for a Touch Pro is not the same as a Hard SPL for a Touch Pro 2?

So are these Hard SPL's widely made? Is there any best place to get them?

Are the Hard SPL's used for hacking anything else?

The hardspl is specific to each device so therefore the hspl for the tp1 will definitely brick your tp2. The hspl's are not widely made, there are an elite few that does this kind of work, the biggest name out of the bunch is cmonex. You can also flash different radio firmware's as well, which may give you better performance depending on location. You won't see too many of this yet since the phone is so new. As far as getting the hspl when its ready would be pretty simple. PPcgeeks is a great place to get alot of information especially if you are using the cdma version of the phone and as soon as the hspl is released we will all know about it.
