Sprint Touch Pro2 and At&t umts

Ive searched and can't seem to find it, but is the reason the TP2 can't use at&t's 3g beccause of hardware or software? and if software is it just a matter of a firmware update? Thank you.

I believe its a matter of unlocking to get 3g to work in US since it works 3g in other nations
