Re: Did I successfully ROOT my HERO? How can I tell?

you could try to install an app that requires root from the market, like quickboot for example.

Yes, I installed that program and it seems to work fine.. used it to reboot, then used it to reboot into recovery mode, didn't try bootloader mode. Does that mean I'm actually rooted? It's android 1.5, sprint.

I guess so, I've never used that program. Try Titanium Backup or Wireless Tether for Root Users (which I CANNOT for the life of me get to work)

Talking Re: Did I successfully ROOT my HERO? How can I tell?

Wifi tether works! YES! Believe it or not that was the main reason I wanted to root my device!

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but what is wifi tether, what does it do, and how would it benefit me?

it lets you use a computer to use your phone's 2G/3G internet as it's own (to let you surf the best internet experience if you aren't anywhere near a wifi signal)
I cannot get the wireless tether to work for me though, I just use pdanet (wired tether)

BTW, if you can get into recovery at all, you are rooted.

I can get into recovery, but when I try to run Wifi tether it says I need root privaleges.

Does that mean I am not rooted?

Re: Did I successfully ROOT my HERO? How can I tell?

Just click Allow. It'll always prompt for root.

TO see if your rooted, I believe the simplest thing is

Connect your device to the USB
Open a command terminal (type cmd in Run)

cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb shell

If you see a # sign instead of a $ sign, you are rooted.
If you see a $, try typing 'su'

If it changes to #, you are rooted.
