What is microsft sharepoint?

Can someone expain what ms sharepoint is in lamen terms. I'm feeling like a noob but for the life of me I can't figure out what it is by Microsoft's discription.

It's a Microsoft product for easily building web portals, managing unstructured data like checking in/out documents, searching data across an enterprise and automating workflow like a list of reviewers of a certain document type.

Yes it is not really a consumer product it is usually implemented with exchange. It is one of many powerful tools that companies can use to help employees collaborate. Unless you work for a company that uses it or if you have your own company and want to improve communication among your employees you really don't have a need for it. My favorite part about the new Exchange services if using voice over ip and voice memos with transcrips (like google voice).
