I've used Google Latitude to do just what you've mentioned. Works great and its free. The catch is that your phone has to have a good GPS fix.

Dont think it has to have a gps fix. I got an estimate location via towers.

I just meant that a GPS fix needs to be there and ongoing before Latitude will work properly. It probably didn't need to be said, but I though for the sake of clarity I would try to make that point. Maybe I've just muddied the waters.
