TouchPal 4.0 Officially Released 5/20/08

Hopefully, I'm not duplicating a thread I missed.

http://www.cootek.com/

I did not try the beta but I'm curious if they corrected some of the things folk here objected to earlier. I've installed the new release and so far so good. A different layout for sure than 3.5. I haven't had time to use it long enough to form an opinion.

As always, the upgraded version will work with your old activation code. CooTek is awesome!

There is NO WAY IN HELL I'm installing this, I tried the beta & hated it & damn near had to do a hard reset to get rid of it.

I love 3.5 & I'm leaving well enough alone at this point.

4.0 definitely takes a little getting used to. I was so use to doing swipes and motions from 3.5 that I had a lot of typos in the beginning. However, after using it for a while I must say I like it a lot more. I 'feels' a little more responsive than the last version. That may be in my head though, who knows...

Re: TouchPal 4.0 Officially Released 5/20/08

OK. V4 gets a couple of thumbs up from me.
First, TouchPal installs easily and elegantly. Finally. V4 cleared out V3.5, kept my dictionary, and filled in my challenge and registration code automatically.
More importantly, I like the way it handles better than 3.5. I've been a TouchPal fan since the first release but 3.5 seemed to have control issues that made it hard for me to get the right words entered unless I turned off some of the bell and whistle features. V4 "feels" right and I've been enjoying both the swipe and the regular layouts.
My jury is out on whether I like it better than FingerKeyboard or not. They are both super on-screen KBs. Between the two of them and the HW keyboard with the light-on fix, I'm all set. BTW, among other things, I am a professional writer and I do a LOT of typing on my TP.

Re: TouchPal 4.0 Officially Released 5/20/08

Overall I am liking v4 much better than v3.5 with one exception. I find the swiping for symbols on the main kb (in v3.5) more efficient than having to switch to the 'symbols' panel for most of the symbols (v4). A variety of symbols use to be so close and easily accessible, now I have to switch to a new page to access anything besides .,? and !. The main kb now has two different ways to enter both a period and a comma. It seems like this space would have been better allocated to a different symbol rather than repeating something that is already there.

Overall, v4 does 'feel' much better and faster than 3.5. It does take some getting use to, and I continue to put '8' where I meant '.' I'll stick with 4 though. I do still have the 3.5 cab if anyone makes the switch and wants to go back. i'll post it later JIC.

I hated the beta because of the changes in the T+ layout. For users like myself that prefer the previous T+ layout I have included the layout patch. To install the patch, navigate to TouchPal/surfaces/english and copy the file over the existing and soft reset.

Rock on, thanks for the patch! I like the old layout more than the new, but i like the feel of v4 more.

Nice. I don't know what they where thinking with this awful new layout.

I am still wondering this however. If I don't care about landscape mode (I would never use it anyway), what exactly would I gain by switching to 4.0??

In certain ROM's I have run, TP lagged at times or just seemed to sort of hesitate for a second while texting which was infuriating.

Now, running merdin's latest 6.5 setup this does not happen at all however. TP 3.5 has been lightning fast with no lag at all (it literally responds faster than I can move my fingers). That being the case, I can't see where I would gain anything whatever from 4.0 but I will try it again if there is some other compelling reason to switch??

It's faster, for one. With the layout patch it's like 3.5 on hyperdrive. I'm still playing around with the SDK tools and I guess I'll be posting more layout patches soon. My first goal is to get rid of those ugly smilies and replace them with more appealing ones. Look for that soon. I'm also open to suggestions as to what else to tweak.

OK, I reinstalled version 4 again with the patch.

I have two quick questions:

1. How do you enable/disable the T+ when the tool box is not showing??

2. How do you enable the "show word candidate inline" option in the new version??

Thanks guitardoc64! I've been playing with TP4 for a few days and it does seem more responsive. The layout definitely looks cleaner but I'm still messing up on punctuation because of the change. Also a couple symbols were missing I seem to use a lot whereas the numbers not so much. Your patch definitely helps with the transition.

jmorton, for enable/disable T+, do you mean switch to a different layout (swipe left/right)?

Oh, and I don't understand why there is a comma and period on L & M when it's already a down swipe next to the space bar?

I have used Touch Pal since version 3 and while it took a little bit of getting used to with the slight differences, I love it and wouldn't go back to 3.5. The pluses far out weigh the negatives, so I would encourage you to try it for a couple of weeks, if you do I highly doubt you will go back.

I have another patch/fix for the patch. Notice the clean back arrow and space button don't have the other symbols? I grabbed this button set from 3.5 and it drops right in. Just copy/paste the file to TouchPal\Resources and soft reset.

Note:for VGA use the first and for QVGA use the zip.

That's not the patch layout. It won't install till you soft reset. Once it's there you should have the familiar layout of symbols. The patch BTW came from the TouchPal forum. I have the SDK tools and am working on tweaking it a bit. I am open for suggestions, so post them!!

No, I'm talking about what the dict button does on the tool box (except when you have the toolbox hidden). In 3.5, to turn off T+ & switch to precise input you swipe up on the backspace key to dot or undot the little circle there. That doesn't work in the new version. I also can't figure out how to add back the "show word candidate inline" function either.

I couldn't find that function in the beta either. If they eliminated that, I will be back to version 3.5 tomorrow.

I have used 4.0 all day today & the more I use it the more I think I like the old version better. I fail to see all these improvements people are talikng about, it is NOT FASTER in my system because 3.5 was lightning fast anyway. What is supposed to be better about this version, i honestly don't get it????

Yes the swipe up does. You just don't see it (unless you install the icons a few posts up) but it does switch to precise input.

Why are all these patches needing to be released, why doesn't CooTek just release a new 4.0.1 or something with all these fixes?

I'm not going to buy the new version unless this happens, lol

Yeah, I have suggested that to them to just bite the bullet and redo V4 from the ground up. Even with the patches, I'm starting to agree with jmorton10. It's not that the program's much better, in many ways it isn't. There were too many things to like about 3.5 that just worked. I had told them way back when it was released that the program was getting to be too large a footprint with all the help files etc, and this one's even bigger. Hell I think the only reason they even released the patch is because I threatened to blast them in this foum and at xda and pull my support. V4 isn't the expansion/upgrade that we all hoped it would be, and I feel they're trying to cover theit a$$.

Oh I know. That's the default layout. I was just pointing out how odd it was to assign to symbols twice basically.

Yeah, I had pointed that out to them too. I still think we'll see them revert to a more classic layout when it's all said and done. I sure haven't let up in my emails to Michael that V4 was released too early with the crap layout. The patch is a bandage to try and "save face" but it's not a total fix. I bet I'm back to 3.5 within a couple of days (Glad I saved the files).

Edit: Nah, I'm gonna revert now....Sent them an email to that effect too.

I'm going to stick with it a little longer. Not sure if the responsiveness is placebo or actually there but I do like it. I miss a few things from the layout but overall your patch extended my "trial" period a bit longer.

I reverted last night, I decided I don't like anything they changed in the new version. The thing is, all the "patches" listed just do things to revert it back to version 3.5

As far as speed, to me they are identical (both are fast as hell)

Re: TouchPal 4.0 Officially Released 5/20/08

I agree John. 3.5 is just as fast, has user configuration that works better for me and others like yourself. The only thing about V4 that I saw as an improvement was the prediction, and that wasn't by much. I think the focus of V4 was the full qwerty and if I used that I might as well use FingerKeyboard.

I agree. I think they had a long vacation for a long time till people started going nuts for an update. To pacify the rowdy crowd, they whipped up some cosmetic changes and mild under-the-hood changes and released it in form of a new version.

I'm certain not a lot of plannin/execution went into v4.

Actually I think it was the fact that they spent all their time developing the Android version. It appears to me that some of the changes are copied over from that. The basic layout of the android version is the qwerty keyboard. It appears the V4 T-9 keyboars is the qwerty with a skin that makes it "look" like the T9 but doesn't have the 4+ way slide that the V3 keyboard does. In V2, V3, and V3.5 it allows an up/down slide for numbers. The 3.5 touch system is VERY efficient because it allows access to a lot more than just letters. I found my breaking point with V4 was due mainly to having to change to this screen and swipe till I got the symbol I wanted and it just took longer. Things that I did like was the disable keyboard switch by swipe, the slightly better word prediction/correction and the dictionary toggle. Even then, those additions were at the cost of useability. I also hated the fact that I had to patch it to make it work for me. Don't get me wrong, I like skinning apps and tweaking PPCs but I never had to patch TouchPal till now, and I just can't get over how complaints like mine, jmorton10 and many others only got addressed with a cheesy patch, instead of going back to what has worked for them and made their SIP useable and unique.

Re: TouchPal 4.0 Officially Released 5/20/08

I installed the 4.0 version and am thinking about switching back. For instance I was typing the word "bud". The only option that they give me is "Bud" With the Captial B. I went to the user dictionary and added "bud" but that does not show up as an option. In fact, NONE of the words added to the dictionary show up as options. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, taking away the yahoo.com etc sucks. Those were great.

Quick question...does anyone know how to edit the english.img file? There are some mistakes in the dictionary and I wanted to correct them. I think the dictionary is there.
