iPhone Software vs Windows Mobile Software

First off, I don't want to start a flame war or anything . I'm just perplexed by the current state of software on both platforms. I'm not a big fan of the iPhone at all. When it debuted, initially it looked nice, but as I started reading more and more about it, it was pretty obvious that it just was not the phone for me. Now with the app store on the scene for less than a year, some of the software thats coming out is just amazing. I've only been a windows mobile user for a little over 2 years now, so a lot of you guys have a lot more history with the platform than I do. But my question is: Why do applications on Windows Mobile just plain suck compared to iPhone apps?

My main two ideas are standardized hardward and more open documentation with Apple backing the app store. What are your thoughts though? Do you think the Marketplace will level the playing field at all?

I love my phone (Touch Pro). What some of the coders here at PPCGeeks and XDA have done are just plain cool and really do make your phone into a pocket PC. I'm just a little bummed that the iPhone platform is taking off, and Windows Mobile is getting left behind. Thoughts?
