I have had pretty good results with Garmin XT... slight lag on my Touch Pro but that's a known issue with this device and ALL GPS programs, not just Garmin...I have a stand alone Tom Tom that is great in some areas, and as you described, just terrible in others...Garmin also has a much nicer and more intuitive interface for a phone...
