find files from cab install

I've got this skin installer for wmp, but the problem is, when I go to switch skins, I lose the one I installed. Like it sets it to the default skin, then if you try to change to another skin then back to default, it's missing.

So basically, I installed other skins simply by dragging and dropping files to a folder and letting wmp find them. I'd like to bypass the install and use the files like any other skin. How can I get the files from a cab without installing them?

Re: find files from cab install

I'm not sure if there's an easier way to do extract files, but the way I do it is to copy the cab to my desktop PC. Open the cab file with a compression utility like WinZip (I use IZArc). Extract the .xml file and open. In the xml file, look for the file name of the skin file. The line should look similar to something like this - <characteristic type="FILENAME.XXX" translation="install">.

Once you've located the line in the xml file that installs the skin, look two lines below the install line to determine what the file name of the skin is in the cab. That line should read something like this: <parm name="Source" value="XXXXXX.nnn" />

Extract that file from the cab to your desktop PC and rename it to the correct skin file name. You can then copy that renamed file back to your device.
