Re: What is the "best" GPS Apps? Any reviews or comparisons available?
Well all I can offer is my own opinion. 100% Google Maps mobile. It's great, has all of the POI's of the regular google maps, and best of all, it's free!
This is the thread where you can find the latest version. The only downside is that it uses your data (or wifi) connection, so if you don't have unlimited data, maybe its not for you. Good luck!

Re: What is the "best" GPS Apps? Any reviews or comparisons available?
Most of these apps are primary for urban navigation. I do a lot of trail riding where cell coverage is spotty at best. What I am looking for is an app I can pre-load maps in with way-point tracking. I used trimble with my Razr which was pretty good, but to my knowledge not available to win-mobile customers. Another of interest is being talked about here.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...hp?t=340667..A perfect gps app would be google map grids pre-loaded into phone with way-point tracking. Is this possible?

I use noniGPS to track my walks with my son... and then export to Google. It is very versatile and turns your PPC into a something of a Handheld Garmin for hiking... Quoted From the Website... http://aeguerre.free.fr/Public/Pocke...t/EN/index.php This tool allows you to locate your position in relation with other GPS points, to see the journey you have traveled. You can find back your place at harbour after a trip on boat, the starting point of an excursion or locate your car in a huge car park, A place of which you know the location, To see the excursion you made, Speed trap alert or lots of other things... Tracks and saved points can be exported to GoogleEarth and to GPX standard. Put your old tracks in the background with a system of tracing, Put maps in the background (moving map), Display a graph of altitude, speed or signal level. |

Example, before I go out in the open desert riding, I could pre-download the 50+/- square miles I will be located, add a way-point for base camp, and then have a path of where I have been by utilizing gps only without data. From what I have seen, garmin is the only this close to this that is available, but I absolutely love the sat view on google maps. I know I am describing a hand -help gps device, but don't see any reason why this couldn't be done on our gps-enabled smart phones. |

Shortbus...
Well.. noniGPSplot isn't "tied" into Google Maps.. but the waypoint abilities are outstanding. GPSplot allows for "Moving Maps".. fancy wording for a big picture you have saved of a map... You can import this pic and the map will move when your location moves... just like google maps. It sounds like you want to use your data connection when available... but if it craps out.. then you want a cached map to work with... Perhaps this could help.... http://www.metacafe.com/watch/107391...ve_large_maps/ That video will show you how to grab large maps from google... which can be saved and imported into noniGPSplot... I tried! phaZed |

I'm a U.S. customer of TomTom Navigator 6. When you mention "the latest TomTom Mobile", what are we talking about? Related? My understanding is that TT7 was released in Europe but we've been "waiting" here in the States. Other rumors say TT7 will never be released here as TT is phasing out "PDA" navigation. And from looking at their web site that seems to be the case, once you set United States as your location. I read through the forum link you referenced and it seems to center around making a VGA version of the released QVGA version. But it also carries along the benefit of getting TT7 to legally access legally purchased TT6 maps. I'm using an Omnia to run TT6 right now. The image is wacky on the QWVGA screen of the Omnia but it works nonetheless. So what I'm wondering is whether you know if any of the discussion of these cabs might be of use to me or not. I hesitate to barge in and end up crippling my running copy of TT6 without trying to get some advice. thanks |
