[UPDATED 7/20] Join the PPCGeeks Group location tracking on Google Maps

So originally this post was a news story about Google adding location tracking to Google Maps but it kinda turned into a thread for all of us to share our gmail addys so we could see where all the PPCGeeks users are located.

I'll try to keep this first post updated with emails in a way that isn't obvious for spam bots to snatch your email. And since you have to have a gmail email account to use this I'll only post them with everything in front of the '@' and just leave off the gmail.com.

If you posted your email and you don't see it on the list within 24 hours shoot me pm because I may have missed you by accident.

If you want to mass add all the names without typing them one by one here's a great tip from saumaun:

For those of you wanting to mass add the contacts, I imported all the currently listed email addresses [adding the gmail extention] to outlook and exported them as a .csv, then uploaded them to GMail. Took less than 30 seconds. If you'd like, I have the csv file, but that could pose some issues as far as spam bots.

Google has added friend-tracking to its Google Maps mobile client. The service allows you to use the cell or GPS position of a some-one from your gmail contact list who has consented to be tracked and see their location on your phone or even desktop. It also adds a twitter-like element, as it allows status updates to be added to the information, allows your friends not just to say where they are, but also what they are doing. The app will also store contact details, meaning calling contacting friends via SMS or e-mail is easily accomplished. In some ways the app seems to be another bold move by Google into the social networking space.

Thats not a bad idea. Like a ppc group so we can see where others of similar interest are at and maybe get a meet up together, especially if we're traveling or something. I like this idea. What about everyone else?

I wish GoogleMaps gave you an option to increase cache or download area maps. Sometimes their servers can be really slow. Oh well.

Pretty cool new revision.

I wonder if they'll eventually modify it to track in the background... ala loopt. Where it will wake up, send postion, then exit again.

edit: nevermind. I learned it already does. Select detect automatically, then exit will yield a confirmation asking "do you want to continue sharing?" and sho enuff it still does. Updates about every 20mins, or if you move a distance greater than about 500m. Sweet..... until my Treo800 locked up this afternoon and would never fully reset until I got in and turned off sharing. Least since its google doing this I know it will eventually work properly. I'm just unsure what to think about the data retention. Google knows where I am, and where I was. *shiver*
