Finer volume control

So I find that generally speaking the volume's fine, but when I'm listening to music it tends to be too loud (gotta save those precious hair follicles in the cochlea). Are there any programs or tweaks out there to increase the resolution of volume control?
I've tried searching... but wasn't able to come up with anything yet.
