Thumbs up Windows Slideshow

Just saw this at WindowITPro:

Q. What is Windows SideShow?
John Savill

A. SideShow is a new feature introduced with Windows Vista. It’s a technology designed to support the delivery of information from your computer to a second display, which can be built into the computer, such as a small display on the lid of a laptop, or a separate device, such as a remote control or mobile phone. The idea behind SideShow is that this second display can not only interact with your computer when the computer is turned on (for example via BlueTooth), but also store data for viewing when the computer is turned off. For example, the second display can store messages from your inbox or information from your calendar.

SideShow is part of Vista’s Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. Don’t confuse SideShow with Windows Sidebar, which allows you to place gadgets such as clocks on your primary display. Like Sidebar, SideShow uses gadgets to enable specific functions. Vista includes inbox, calendar, and Windows Media Player gadgets for SideShow, so you can read mail, view calendar data, and control Windows Media Player from a SideShow device. You can also get more gadgets from the SideShow gallery.

Q. How can I turn my Windows Mobile 5 or 6 device into a Windows SideShow device?
John Savill

A. Microsoft provides a developer preview of a SideShow application for Windows Mobile. The application runs on your mobile phone and connects to the Sideshow service in Windows Vista via Bluetooth. The application can run all available gadgets.

The download page for the application

has installation instructions. Once you’ve installed the application, make sure to pair your phone with your computer via Bluetooth. Launch the SideShow application on your mobile device and connect the device to your computer by clicking the Connect button. The gadgets that you’ve enabled for your device will be available.

Q. How do I turn my Windows Mobile device into a controller for Microsoft Office PowerPoint?
John Savill

A. Once you’ve installed the Windows SideShow for Windows Mobile application as I described in the previous question, download the Office PowerPoint Remote gadget from the Windows Live SideShow gallery.

This gadget lets you control your PowerPoint presentation and displays a preview of the next slide your mobile device.
