Question How Do I Rename This File With Total Commander?!

Yeah, so I own a TP, and I'm trying to put a custom start menu icon on it. The post says to use Total Commander to rename shellres.192.dll, but every time I try to rename it, it just goes back to the original name.

I looked at the properties and realized that it was a Read-Only file...so I UNchecked that bos, but it made no difference.

What am I doing wrong?

Re: How Do I Rename This File With Total Commander?!

I just did the step you are talking about.. I was not able to re-name it either.. I just copied the new shellres.192.dll into /windows, than turned it off, turned it back on and it was all set to go.. I didn't have to rename the file..

Re: How Do I Rename This File With Total Commander?!

You'll need to use resco explorer for that. And you may have better luck using resco to copy your modified file over the old file. An overwrite works for sure, I'm not sure about renaming a system file...

I see... Are you sure? Because a lot of people have said that they've been using TC to do this. In that case, is Resco Explorer free? I'd rather not pay for something like that jst to change around a few icons, ya know?

It has a 15-day trial. Install it, do what you need to do and uninstall it.

Research? I use resco all the time for overwriting files in rom. I use this method extensively when making OEMs. I copy the new file to my storage card, and then use Resco Explorer to overwrite/copy the file on the storage card over the botched file in \windows all the time with resco. I'm not sure if it will rename it, and that is what I also posted in my previous post. Just verified that totalcommander will also overwrite a file with the same name.

I can't rename dll's with tc either. I am trying to replace some dll's per the steps shown in the custom taskbar thread. If I try to rename it, it will just switch back. Very anoying - not sure what to do now

Re: How Do I Rename This File With Total Commander?!

Are you replacing it with a modified file? I use TC and here's what I do. I first copy the original file into my "Original DLLs" folder, go to the file that needs to be changed, add " . bak " to the end, and go to the file that's replacing the old one, copy/move it to the directory and that's that.
