BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
BAF MSL Grabber is an application to quickly and painlessly give you the MSL code for any CDMA HTC device running Windows Mobile. It sure beats having to do manual hacking or trying to convince Sprint to give it to you over the phone. The MSL is the code you are required to enter to edit any of your radio parameters. One popular parameter change is to lower the slot-cycle index, which makes your phone poll the tower more often, thereby making your phone ring quicker when someone calls you. Radio/PST configuration edits can be found all over the web via Google.
Please note that to use this you must have .NET 3.5 instealled on your device. To download, please visit http://www.baf.cc/bafmsl - you can either download the .cab and transfer it to your phone and install it, or scan the QR code with software such as i-Nigma. OEM is also over at the site. This is the first fully QR-Code ready app I have released, meaning that if you go to the About tab and click share, a QR code will pop up so others can scan+download directly off the screen of your device. Screenshot: http://code.baf.cc/mslgrab/mslgrabber.png I hope this isn't going to put me in some kind of legal jeopardy. I don't see why it would, maybe I need a disclaimer someplace though. |

you are my hero.....thanks baffles. your a tremendous asset to this community.

Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
I'm trying to track down a random bug, so if you used this, please post and let me know if it worked or not, and if you have a hardSPL installed or not.
huynhc: no problem! :) thanks for the compliment |
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
once i installed, i had to soft-reset for it to work. had net 3.5 installed the first day i got the phone so didnt think i had to reset to get the .exe to work but i did and it ended up working fine.
|
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
Try this version of .NET 3.5 if you have any issues, as well.
|
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
I already have my MSL, but wanted to try yours out. Didn't work for me and gave me some error about NETCFv35.Messages.EN.wm missing. I uninstalled my version of .net 3.5 and installed the one you linked and got the same error after a reboot. Googled and found NETCFv35.Messages.EN.wm which I installed and rebooted. Ran again and now it just says "The port 'COM9:' does not exist.
I'm still on the stock rom if it helps you any. |
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
COM9 is supposed to be open to the radio, yet it seems to be purely random if it will work or not. I haven't been able to reproduce it not working on any of my devices though. One person I was having test it went so far as to install hardSPL and it still didn't work, then he uninstalled/reinstalled .NET 3.5 and it worked after soft resetting (though .NET wasn't the issue because it didn't work in PortaPuTTY either).

Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
Got a .NET 3.5 error after installing (.NET was already installed).
Soft reset and worked great. let me in to ##778# without issue. |
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
DL'd using the barcode, saved in My Docs... will not open. Get the wait animation for a few secs then nothing. NETCF should already be on here. Will dl the NETCF from a few posts up and see if that helps.
EDIT: Installed the provided NETCF cab and it now launches and gave me my MSL with no issues. |
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
Worked great on my mogul...thanks
|
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
For those of you getting COM9 error, put phone in flight mode and try again. It appears to fail with an open data connection that is active. Compusmurf and NexVision helped track this down.
If you are getting errors in BAF MSL, make sure to close your data connection and/or put your phone in flight mode while retrieving MSL. |

Here is an application I found a while back that does the same thing. Input your ESN number and it spits out the MSL for the device.
I've used it for my friends at work to give them their MSL numbers without having the install anything on their phones. |
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
Here's an idea for a future version... since the Get MSL button is on the initial screen, there's no point having as a soft menu key. However, the logical next-step once you have the MSL is to launch EPST for customizations, so perhaps the menu key should instead open the the EPST tool... and, if possible, enter the obtained MSL code automatically. :)
So short version-- Softkey triggers ##778#, (and if possible) automatically selects Edit and enters the MSL code. |
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
sadly it doesn't work on HTC Diamond.. but great efforts nonetheless..

Not sure to the feasibility of auto-entering MSL, but definitely linking to EPST is a nice feature. Quote:

Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
Baffles,
the problem is with the new MEID as you may already know... the application will generate a number for you but it doesn't work.. the only method so far for MEID devices is the registry hack.. maybe you could do a small program that will enable the registry values for logging and then read the output from the text file that the ATDbgLog makes which is a folder in the root of the device that contain a text file with correct MSL... |
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
My program will work on MEID as well, it takes a huge shortcut on the registry hack. My main testing device was the Touch Pro, which as you know, is an MEID device.

Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
thanks a lot dude.. the weird thing after format and trying the program again everything went smooth and worked fine... excellent and time/life saving program ;)

Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
worked on my htc touch. thank you.

Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
I have a new version ready, the only problem is it adds a dependency for toggling flight mode, so it won't be a single exe to just download and run, I'll prolly end up cabifying it.
The new version auto-toggles flight mode (after asking you, of course), and will launch PST. There are some other fun features I may add to it too, relating to the radio itself. The other option is to keep it a single exe, and have it extract the .dll to a temporary location while running. |
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
Thanks for all your efforts
|
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
New version if anyone wants to test it. It's not officially released yet, but should work fine. Install, run it from Start->Programs->BAFTools, it should auto toggle flight mode if youre not already in it (asking you before it just does it), then gives you a link to launch PST too.

Just tried the new version on my Touch Pro. Had to soft reset, then it worked! Thanks for this tool!
|
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
Um, a noob question, I got it to run and thank you so very much for this, but I don't know what number I need in EPST, is it the MEID number? there is also a MSID
|
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
Doesn't work for me. I have microsoft .net cf 3.5, downloaded the cab and ran, didnt work. soft reset, still not working. All it tells me when I run it is "there has been an error retrieving your MSL. Get in touch with BAF for more assistance, and to report the issue, Thanks!" I have an HTC Touch Pro, stock ROM, with Sprint.

Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
^ yeah same here
|
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
i installed it and it didnt work at first! the trick is soft reset. you may want to add that in the install instructions. works like a charm. great app

I get the error on the Diamond and the Touch Pro as well.

Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
Worked for me on Sprint HTC Touch Pro. I answered 'Yes' to switch to flight mode. I did not need to soft reset. I just installed .NET Compact Framework 3.5, then the BAF application, then ran it.
|
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
I have the Sprint Touch Pro and it was not working for me until I put it into flight mode, turned off ms data push and soft reset. When the device came back on with no connections active it finally worked.
|
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
sorry about the slow response... I already tried the soft reset, I have stock sprint rom: 1.03.651.3. the phone is in flight mode. I have tried it without being in flight mode, and the program changes it to flight mode.
Tweks I have include: Sprint flip clock advanced config tool gyrator 2 JUVS HTC network plugin TF3D config No curtains mUn Background4All and thats it. Any help would be appreciated :) I know I can get the MSL by calling in and telling them i need to do an RTN, but this would be handy to have. |
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
I installed the BAF and it worked fine. I was able to make the changes but now when I run the "Grabber" it gives me an error retrieving my MSL. I removed it and reinstalled but i still have the same issue. Can you offer any support?
|
Re: BAF MSL Grabber, version 1
The new version worked fine for me too, after asking me nicely if it could go to airplane mode first. I'm running MSR 3.2 on my Diamond, so dot net 3.5 was pre-installed on the ROM.
