I have been able to explore older backup files with the newer unpack utility, so I think they should be compatible, as far as restoring though, I don't know if you can customize as much as with the new version.

Most will say the device, and I believe it IS the suggested place, but I have had it on my card for a couple years now, and I have never had a problem with it, so I would say if your concerned about memory (and who isn't?), go ahead and install on your memory card.

I've installed most of my backup programs on the card and have never had any issues.

Only since it has a today screen plugin would I recommend you install to main memory. If you don't use the today plugin, then it really doesn't matter.

This new version is way more than I expected it to be, and I expected a lot. SPB really has outdone themselves with this one, kinda like they did with Pocket Plus 4! If I could double thank you Nautica, I would!

how is the backup supposed to work with a ROM upgrade? Is there a "special" setting to restore to a new ROM? I don't see how it is really possible? Going from say JD's clean ROM to a different custom ROM? Won't that mess with a lot of settings?

I hope this helps, I understand the confusion. I think this quote will also explain a bit of the customization of restoring that I was trying to explain earlier.

From the manual:

"Device and ROM Upgrade Modes
Now you can safely upgrade your device ROM or change your device and seamlessly restore your data. Spb Backup will automatically detect if the restore process is being performed between different devices or ROM versions and prompt you to select the upgrade mode to perform."

I will attatch the full manual as well:

I tried it going from the 3.0.2 leaked rom to the Almost OEM 6.1 Sprint ROM v.3.0.zip rom - didn't work...

restored, but everything was messed up afterwards.
