WeatherPanel Download Index

Announcing:

Commuter-240-QVGA

http://story.nventure.com/pics/Commuter-240-1.gif

What it is:

A WeatherPanel theme built with the car commuter in mind. Provides current weather conditions at a glance, plus quick access to multiple traffic camera images (or any kind of image, for that matter)
to help keep on top of the traffic jams.

Features:
  • Elegant, uncluttered display
  • Built for easy one-handed operation with WP-Pilot
  • Quick access to multiple traffic cameras
  • New technology: Shows the ACTUAL Moon Phase on the night icons
  • Pop-up windows with large button bar for easy "touch" selection
  • Enhanced "24 Hour Combined Temp./Precipitation" chart
  • Supports 240x240 and 240x320 devices, in both portrait and landscape orientation
  • Layouts come in dark (black) or light (silver)
  • .Cab files included for easy installation to storage card
http://story.nventure.com/pics/Commuter-240-2.gif

Note: This theme MUST be used with the Commuter-240-QVGA Icon set. It will not work correctly with other icon sets.

Installation
  • Installation instructsions can be found in the Commuter-240-QVGA Readme file.
  • Installation options include manual installation via ZIP file, or a CAB file install (to facilitate installation to your storage card - the icon set is kind of big). I recommend installing the theme to your device's main memory, though.
Acknoweldgements
  • Thanks to Doreen who's wonderful Vista Alive theme for WAD was the inspiration for Commuter-240's sidebar. The Vista Alive theme can be found here.
  • Thanks to xcilion who's Vista Portable Edition theme for WA2 (available here) was the inspiration for the overall look of Commuter-240. Some of Commuter-240's graphics were sampled from Vista PE.
  • Thanks to CodyPPC who beta tested the theme and offered some excellent suggestions for improvement.

WP Image Tutorial

2 Attachment(s)
Since this theme is centered around exploiting WeatherPanel's ability to capture images from the internet, here's a tutorial to help folks get the stuff they want...

Just awesome! Thanks you once again storyr. :D

My pleasure. This one won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I really like the clean look. It may be a little tall for some folks (70 pixels), but it required a some height in order to make viewing images worthwhile...

codyppc 02-25-2007 05:54 PM

great job story.

thanks, cody

gadgetluva 02-25-2007 08:34 PM

this is actually something I've been looking for, just something really nice and simple to show current conditions :)

gadgetluva 02-25-2007 08:43 PM

Is there anyway to use WeatherPanel with WP-Pilot within PocketBreeze?

gadgetluva 02-25-2007 09:33 PM

is there anyway to update this so it shows tomorrow's high/low in the corner or anything?

Pibe38 02-25-2007 09:41 PM

Awesome work!!! Thanks!!!

jscottcj 02-25-2007 10:23 PM

Looks great story... especially with WAD... do you find that WAD slows your Treo at all?

I'm thinking of investing in it, but have read some rants about here in ppcgeeks... just curious and sorry for the off-topic remark...

thx in advance for any advice/feedback you can offer...

Thanks! Nice and simple - that was my goal.

Well, that's an issue. WP-Pilot, which is a plug-in itself, must be activated to work. That's why it should be directly above or below WP to work properly. Since PocketBreeze allows only one plug-in per tab, it makes it difficult. I don't own PB, so I haven't spend any time at a solution.

To keep it nice and simple, I don't plan to add any additional information to the layout. The pop-up windows contain all of the detailed weather information...

Hey, thanks. Just to clarify - I'm running WA2, not WAD. WAD is a whole different deal. I love it - it works great on the 700wx. I know folks with the 700w can have issues though - memory related...

wowthatisrandom 02-25-2007 11:31 PM

I've noticed that WP sometimes won't notice right away when the scroll bar disappears - such as after you reduce the height of TodayAgenda. Try accessing the Today settings again to get the plugins to refresh.

wowthatisrandom 02-26-2007 12:34 AM

that fixed it ur the man

I can't get WP Pilot to do it within Pocket Breeze either.

It would be the perfect set up for me if I could.

Anytime. A PM or a new post under Pocket PC Software or in the Post Your Today Screen thread would be best...

Is there a manual showing how to make different skins for WeatherPanel. I looked at WeatherPanel’s home page an couldn’t find anything

You can find information at the www.weatherpanel.net forum. Near the top of the page is a link to a Wiki that has a basic layout guide...

michaelp 02-27-2007 11:47 AM

thanks storyr

Doreen 02-27-2007 12:04 PM

Gotcha, I found out about WP-Pilot after I asked the question. Still, this is my favorite skin so far.

On a Side note, do you think you'll make anything that shows the current conditions with the next day or two in the forecast? Something akin to Yahoo! Widgets' default weather widget?

lgreenberg 02-27-2007 09:47 PM

As much as I like this skin I like Chameleon more so I've gone back to it. It just means no more large Phone Alarm skins. This way I don't have to insert WP as a tab in Pocket Breeze. It can be on it's own and allow me to utilize WP Pilot.

I forgive you

I knew it would be too tall for some folks, and besides - WP-Pilot is a must! :D

Good idea - I may add another button in the pop-up to show a multi-day forecast. In the meantime, (you may already know this) you can:

After the pop-up is displayed, hit "right" on the d-pad and the forecast will go to the next day - up to 10 days worth. "Up" and "down" cycles the cities...

I love it very easy to use :D

Hey, thanks mofo

Easy was the idea. I use a powered cradle in my car - I wanted this theme to be easy to navigate with one finger while in stop-and-go traffic.

BTW, does anyone have any feedback on the WP Image Capture Tutorial (found here)? If there are any mistakes or improvements that could be made, feedback would be appreciated...

Very informative... pulling images from traffic cams is a genius way to use WP!

Unfortunately, the only Washington DC traffic cams that I can use are through trafficland.com and they have some kind of timestamp in their image URL that will time out if it is not updated by a browser post... bummer.

But still, thanks for the guide and the skins!

Love weather panel.....

One quick question though....I am trying to install the moon phase fix, and I have the weatherpanel.dll unzipped, and the instructions say to replace the old file with the new one (weatherpanel.dll), the problem is that I can't find the file in the weatherpanel program folder in my device....has anybody done this, or be able to help me do the fix?

This is a question for the Moon Phase Fix thread. Try here...

How long ago did you download and install Chameleon-240-V2? I recall seeing this a while ago (on my own device) and uploading a fix.

Also, how often do you update?

sanyo 03-31-2007 07:17 PM

installed it about 5 days ago. i have it set to update every 30 mins but i click update from time to time though out the day. especially yesterday cause we had really bad storms and i was looking at the radar. and everytime i softreset it shows this same N/A icon and the rest of the theme is empty except my city and the word "Moon xx%" but no moon image.

Pibe38 03-31-2007 07:25 PM

Did you install the fix for the moon phases?

http://www.ppcgeeks.com/weatherpanel...xed-t1850.html

sanyo 03-31-2007 09:21 PM

yes. i installed the moon update fix through 2008 and also the moon fix for "g" 1-13 profiles as well. i have weatherpanel v2.5 and the v2 of the Chameleon skin. i figured out it's pretty much basically every time i refresh the today screen. after coming out of the today settings for example.

I'm sorry to disappoint, but WeatherPanel is not capable of displaying information on waves, tides or ocean conditions. The only thing I see on your list that it can display is wind.

The main reason is this: WeatherPanel gets its weather information from a weather.com web service. I've analyzed the data that weather.com sends, and none of this information is in it. Secondly, even if it was, WeatherPanel doesn't have the layout commands to show it.

I think someone would have to write a custom solution for surfers, which would be cool 8) But, you couldn't make any money at it, 'cause surfers don't have any money
