The DirecTV thingy is actually just a website. You log in with the account you created on Directv's main site (with which you can also pay your bill online and change stuff around), search for a show that you want to record by typing in the name of the show, and then tell it to record it. If you are like me and have more than one DVR, it gives you the choice on which one you want to record it.
