cool! 8)

Anyone tried this yet or know of a place with a review for a WM5 device? I'm using MS Live Search and really like it. I did read that Google Maps tracks the data usage in the corner of the screen, which I like.

*downloads and installs!*
EDIT: I have one word...DAMN! No slowdowns, hangups, etc. Smooth and quick loading!! Me likey!!!! later, Coz |
very nice. thank you very much for posting Mal.

Is anyone able to install this application to their storage card? When prompted I select install to storage card, but it still installs into main memory! I don't even see an option to locate the map cache to the storage card, so that's even a bigger problem. I posted this over at the PDAPhoneHome forum as well.

I went ahead and installed it...
It seems really cool! Any tips on how to get the best out of it for a beginner? How can I set the preferences so that it starts from my city instead of San Francisco? And do I need an external GPS receiver with it or is there a way to make it use the internal 911 locator cell tower GPS thing (whatever it's called)? Using a Sprint PPC-6700. What is this MS Live search? Does it use the internal cell tower GPS thing or does it require an external GPS unit? |

Anyone know where cache for this app is? I wanna clear but can't find it...
|
Pibe38,
I could not find any cache to easily clear or move either... Doh! The downloaded map files are stored in the Google Maps folder within your My Device Application Data folder. On a related note, I could move the program itself to the minisd card program files folder, set up a shortcut, and it would run fine. But when I moved the Google cache folder from the Application Data folder, Google Maps would error out upon start up. So... eventhough it worked well with GPS etc... Not being able to easily clear or move the map data was a deal breaker here. Nonetheless... hopefully Google or someone will get a chance to fix the install to card problem, as well as add a storage card data cache option, or post a way to move the data folder to the card without the error issue... |
i have been using it and monitoring my memory and nothing seems to make it go lower. it is like it is erasing it after it is used.
|
Good app. the contacts searches dont use the address if the contact has one (grr) and the look up by phone number seems close, but never that accurate.

Can anyone else verify that the cache-GLM erases itself instead of increasing in size? Maybe it's just my ole apache, lol... Anyway, for those seeing a directly related decrease in your program storage memory. You can move the GoogleMaps program to your card in order to save some memory, and manually delete the cache-GLM from time to time. Hope this helps, R |
never mind my previous comment, i fat fingered my adresses and got weird results (go figure) :?

I got a chance to use this over the weekend while I visited my mom in KC. I really like this, even more than MS Live Search. After coming home I checked the cache size and it was just over 2mb. If you go to Options, Reset Google Maps, it'll let you reset the applications which I guess is supposed to delete the cookies, history of search terms, preferences, and map & satellite image cache. I did this and notice and decrease in my memory usage. I do have it installed to the storage card and haven't have any problems with it all weekend. However, I did have MS Live Search randomly close on my 3 or 4 times for no apparent reason. When that happened I'd just open GoogleMaps and it smooth sailing from there.

For a first day user
This is pretty impressive SW.
Looks great on a new Treo 750v. Now if only I could get the SW that the company I work for wrote to work... |
Version 1.0.1 is up now!!! Not sure about what the changes are...
|
Oh well I'm definitely going to have try the 'official' version. lets see what changes were made and how this one compares to Live Search...

I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstall and see if that does it.... Or, is there any difference b/w 1.0.0 and 1.0.1 that I need? jv |

Well, I tried to install to the storage card but it ended up on the device  (i am using BigJ's 3.5r8 btw). I just installed Live Search to compare (which did install just fine to the storage card so maybe the install directory is just a Google Maps problem; Live Search: 1, Google Maps: 0) I like how Google Maps shows you the 'Total data received:, Cache size, and Network Retries'. But Live Search lets you cache to the storage card w/ a max of 8MB. I think LS edges out GM on that one but not enough for a point.
http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/goo...ps101-full.jpg http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/liv...rsion-full.jpg Google Maps is in fact version 1.0.1 With the app open, under Menu/Options there is 'Lookup contact'. I don't remember that being there before. Can anyone confirm? But when you select that it automatically brings up only the contacts that have address information stored in them. In Live Search when you want to select an address from a contact it brings up all the contacts, not just the ones with address info. However, Google Maps did have a few problems finding some of the addresses I had in my contacts where Live Search didn't have a problem with any of them. One thing I really like is the ability to search for business or places nearby and then save them to your contacts. I already did the search and found the place I wanted to add. This is how LS does it: http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/LSs...tacts-full.jpg http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/LSc...saved-full.jpg Everything was very slick. Then by selecting 'Menu' in the lower right you can: Call, Directions To Here, Directions From Here, ect. Lets see how GM does it: http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/GMs...tacts-full.jpg http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/GMc...msave-full.jpg http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/GMc...saved-full.jpg So it worked just as easily as LS but that extra confirmation screen annoys me and it takes more taps to get it saved. I like the way LS does it. Lets look at the way each shows the Traffic. I tried using LS to check in the Olathe/KC Kansas area and nothing came up, but it did come up in GM. You can check to see which cities are covered in LS by starting from the Home screen and going to Traffic. The list for LS is: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New York, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Providence, Sacramento, Salt Lake city, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Tampa, and Washington DC. If you live in those areas and need to know traffic info I would suggest using LS because it is very easy to use. But lets look at some cities they both can view. First, Chicago area zoomed out a bit: http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/LSc...affic-full.jpg http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/GMc...affic-full.jpg Chicago area zoomed a bit: http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/LSc...omed1-full.jpg http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/GMc...zoom1-full.jpg Chicago area zoomed in a bit more: http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/LSc...omed2-full.jpg http://dannzeman.googlepages.com/GMc...zoom2-full.jpg I like the LS does it again. You'll have to check to see what areas GM covers. They might cover areas LS doesn't, like the KC, Kansas area. Basically, you just need to try out both and see which you like better. I like the zoom in and zoom out buttons on the screen w/ GM and I like the Home screen w/ LS. LS seemed to find locations a little bit better than GM for the places I selected. I liked the way LS added places to your contacts. For me, I would pick LS. |
I just downloaded the CAB from the link, they don't really tell you it's a new version. I installed over the old version and the About screen now shows the new version number.
I'm liking Live Search a little better still! |
New Updated version available I edited the first post and added the cab. I like this mapping program better than Live Search, no CF 2.0 needed, I don't use CF 2.0 because it takes up a lot of memory, and on 6700 I need all the extra memory I can get.
|
This also works great with the Pharos BT GPS receiver! I love Google Maps! The the LIve maps does have better traffic info on the fly.
Oh and this is installed on a Verizon 6700. I know Verizon has problems running java apps and was previously not able to run google maps until google's recent release. |
I have a Garmin mobile Bluetooth Gps receiver for my 8525 would I be able to use it with Google Maps? Does it have directions and routes?
|
- google maps for a quick address lookup
- live search for a "this is what i want to do but where are my options" type of thing. - iguidance for voice nav if one or the other had voice nav, i could do away with either and just have one killer app! |

Coz: Google is notorious for not giving a list of updates or fixes, so at this point who knows  (also, the files in the .cab are dated 2/15, so I don't think this is too new) |
ive had v.1.01 for a long time?? wats new? i dont get it
|
THANKS....
Bless you and Good luck |
It appears that Google Maps is now version 1.2.0.2. Maybe one of mods can update the first post with the latest cab.
