Visual Voicemail
I was wondering if there was a program out there for a ppc that is like visual voicemail on the iPhone...anybody know if there is?
|
That is not just a phone feature. I think I read that AT&T had to totally re-do thier voicemail system to be able to provide that for the iphone.
|
The only way to get that is by letting someone other than your carrier handle the voicemail. For example, grandcentral.com has visual voicemail via their mobile web interface (free). However, you would have to setup your voicemail to be handled by them instead of with your carrier. It's possible as I've read threads where others have used 3rd party voicemail providers. I have not done this myself, so I can't explain how its done.
Check out this wiki for other options - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_voicemail |
I did set this up with sprint(another voicemail provider. callwave.com). It was an up hill battle and then I got $80 in charges for call forwarding. IT WAS VERY HARD. I had reps tell me it was impossible and gave many codes to dial that didnt work.
|
Apparently, you have to contact tech support rather than customer support to get the correct free forwarding setup as customer service is clueless. I did some reading after my post yesterday and standard call forwarding does charge while No Answer Call Forwarding, Busy Call Forwarding, and Unreachable Call Forwarding are supposedly free. See the link below for more info.

how do u use this
i tried using the program above but cant seem to get it to get the voicemail from my phone on to it it ask for voice mail from emails is there any way i can but the voice mail on my phone on a email so it can work ..... or do something else to make it work
|
I believe this is for people who have systems at work that forward voicemails as emails. I do not think this can intercept incoming calls on the ppc and then record the voicemails.
|
Aww you're right
"...if you receive them as audio file attachments on your e-mail." |
As Stroths said Grand Central offers visual voicemail. But it's only for the number that they issue you. For example, you give out your Grand Central number which can be forwarded to any number you want. You can forward it to home, cell, etc. all at the same time. You can than log in to your GC account and "see" who has left you a voice mail if you missed their call.

a new feature by verizon [ i believe ] turns your voicemail into text. other carriers are starting to test this feature. they charge per voicemail turned into text.

Go www.youmail.com make account, set up send voicemail mp3 attach to my email then send to you www.mail2web.com free direct push email address,,
Then, install mVisualVoicemail to you phone. Now you can personalize greeting to each person who call you. And direct push mail to your phone > Visual. |

Re: visual voicemail
You might check out GrandCentral. It allows for Visual Voicemail through their website using your phone. There is an in-house thread discussing it too.

Re: visual voicemail
while I appreciate coz's enthusiasm for grandcentral, it has been closed for some time, and I'm not sure if it will ever be open again as a free service. I do however think you may as well "reserve" a number, if nothing more than s&g. I have been looking at alternatives for this and there are many.
personally I was looking for an all-in-one with 800#(I have a vanity #), exchange hosting, voicemail2email, and eFax. I currently use ringcentral for my eFax, but they don't have exchange. the best option I've found so far is OneBox, they claim direct push exchange, as well as pst import on their executive plan ($17/mo). http://www.onebox.com/products/exec-feat.asp The problem lies with the cell carriers, as they often charge to fwd to an offsite #. |

Re: visual voicemail
I use callwave and have been very happy with it. It looks like they may have started charging (?), but that may just be for the service where they transcribe your messages to text. I've been using it for quite a while now and have not been charged for the answering service which allows me to check my messages online. Also a nice feature is that it will email you the .wav file to listen to on your phone. No more using minutes to check voicemails is a nice thing.
As far as things costing extra through Sprint, double check that. I know that sprint charges for forwarding calls, but not for forwarding on unanswered or forward on busy which is what you want. Again I have had callwave set up which requires that i forward any calls that i don't answer to a separate number, and have not had any problems or extra charges. I hope this helped. If you have any questions, I'll check back. |
Re: visual voicemail
I did this with callwave on Sprint, and though they reassured me multiple times that "no, you won't be charged for call forwarding on unanswered calls" I still got charged *shock*
It was a cool gizmo type feature, but not worth paying Sprint $.20 per voicemail. |
Re: visual voicemail
Ask to speak with the technical support team. They will get you set up (they understand the difference a little better). I agree it's not worth it if you pay per voicemail, but it sounds like somebody goofed on Sprint's end (no big surprise). It sounds like you already did this, but try again and tell them to forward on busy and forward on not answered. Also tell them that somebody goofed last time and you ended up getting charged. Ask them to make a note of it in their system that you are setting up forwarding options for which you should not be charged in case you have to call back and get the charges reversed.
When you get it set up, it's really nice because the email says who the message is from and you can store the wav file in case it is something you ever have to refer back to. The big plus in my mind though is that you don't have to use your minutes to check your voicemail and you can choose what you want to listen to in what order. |

Re: visual voicemail
is it like this on the simply everything plan.
|
Re: visual voicemail
wait, are you saying that you are not supposed to be charged on a forward if it is during busy or a no answer?!?!?!?!?
|
Re: visual voicemail
I did go through tech support and asked 5 times if I would be charged per forwarded call, and was assured that I would not be. I then called back and talked with tech support again and had that person look at my account and asked if I would be charged per forwarded call with it being set up the way it was. Again, they said "no, you will not be charged for Call Forward-No answer and Call Forward-Busy calls" but like I said, I was charged. This was Sprint charging me, not CallWave. CallWave was actually a pretty good service. Sprint just doesn't know it's hind end from a refrigerator.

Re: visual voicemail
i wish this was true. ive tried twice and gotten charged both months and i just called 4 tech support guys and they all said you get charged 20 cents for no answer and busy. too bad were unlucky enough to be wiht the only company that charges for call fowarding at all.

they have a free version that checks your v/m box 3 times a day, no mp3. Premium = $10/mo with mp3 attachments, ect... I haven't tried this, just remember it from when I was hunting... |

Re: visual voicemail
Don't know, didn't bother. Just switched it back and did away with the visual voicemail. It was cool, but not worth all the hassle of arguing about a bill each month with Sprint.
|
Re: visual voicemail
It's a problem with the rep that put it in the system. It sounds like you got screwed, but i assure all of you, sprint DOES NOT CHARGE for the forward on busy and forward on unanswered. Maybe they didn't set it up for ONLY those things. Sorry you had those issues, but I've been using it for a long time now and have never received a charge. It did take talking to 3 people as I was unsure that the first two knew what they were talking about. Agreed that If you have to call every month it's probably not worth it. But if you call and don't even talk to the first person, just ask to be sent to level 2 support, they should know what they are doing there.
|
Re: visual voicemail
p.s. you can check unlimited times with callwave. Plus it sends you the wav file in an email if you set it up that way, so you have them stored on your phone anyway.
|
Re: visual voicemail
Sprint DOES charge $.20/minute for all call forwarding, regardless if it is unconditional, busy, no answer, etc. Not sure how you got around it, but I was told that from a Tier 2 supervisor after a similar experience to what Yuma had. Keep doing whatever you're doing pezx, but others should expect to be charged.
|
Re: visual voicemail
Well I don't know what to say to that Tripdub1. Believe me, I know Sprint customer service can be a pain in the butt and don't always get things right, but unless they changed their policy in the last couple of months (I had to change my forward numbers when I switched to Callwave from another service) and I got grandfathered in, Sprint doesn't charge. They charge for unconditional call forwarding, but the following 3 should be free.
No Answer Call Forwarding (No Reply Forwarding) Busy Call Forwarding (Busy Call Transfer) Unreachable Call Forwarding (Phone Off Forwarding) When I set mine up people were saying the same things which is why I made sure that they made a note in my file that they do not charge for the type of forwarding that I was getting (just in case I had to call back to get a refund). First level didn't seem to understand the difference at all. Tier 2 understood after some talking to. It seems like I'm going back and forth with people, so I apologize if it seems that I'm spouting nonsense. Again, they may have changed their policy recently. It's always possible, but I doubt it. I'll try to clarify with them at some point in the next couple of days to see if I can post exact instructions, or if I could find out that I've been grandfathered in to something good. |
Re: visual voicemail
It's not nonsense, you have just had a different experience and been told differently. No problem with that at all. Please do keep us updated on what you find out. I'd really love to be able to avoid the charges.
|
Re: visual voicemail
Well, it looks like they do now charge. However anybody who had it set up before they "switched their systems" is grandfathered in and will not be charged. It seems they did this in January or early February. If you set it up before then and have been charged, you can call them and have the charges reversed and they will fix it so you are no longer charged while you can keep the service.
I must say that pretty much sucks. Since they've pulled this sort of thing in the past and I'm not a big fan, I'll let you all in on what I did to combat it. Any time they mess up your bill call and complain so it is documented. After a few times, call to cancel your service stating that they broke their end of the contract several times and you are no longer interested in continuing to receive service from them. You would like them to allow you to get out of your contract which you consider voided by their actions. They will tell you this is impossible most likely. Tell them too bad. Eventually you should be sent to customer retention. They will ask you how they can make it right. Get creative. My contract is currently $40 per month and includes 500 minutes and unlimited everything else including nights that start at 6. I know that was completely off topic and i'm sorry for that. It just really annoys me that Sprint keeps doing the same crap and apparently you're the victim because you didn't request something soon enough to get it free. Good luck to all of you (if you're not Sprint, I still recommend Callwave as I understand Verizon and Alltel's call forwarding is still free - but don't quote me on that at this point!). |
Re: visual voicemail
oooh ok. that sucks :-( . so does this mean that ANY visual voicemail that i get will be charged??

Re: visual voicemail
Acision seems to be an ad revenue service company in general, so i'd be weary (no I haven't heard more). Another option I'll put out there even though I had a bad experience with them is SimulSays. Like Callwave it is free (again with Sprint you have to pay to have your calls forwarded, but for any other carrier it is free to my knowledge). One thing I liked about SimulSays is that they had an application which ran on your phone which would get the messages rather than relying on your email. One thing I didn't like is that they started charging me out of the blue and were quite rude. I eventually received an apology from the CEO for how I was treated, but I was unable to retrieve my last couple of voicemails from the company because they deleted my account when I asked about the charges. So again I wouldn't suggest them over CallWave, but it's an alternative anyway.
