Not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere...I did search around for it...

One feature I sorely wish that the Touch had is the ability to lock the screen from touch input as soon as a call is placed or answered, like the iPhone does. I am hearing impaired and I have to really get the phone close to my ear but unfortunately I've had issues with applets turning on and what not because of my face pressing the screen. Sure, I can lock the screen manually with the long push of the call end button, but that's a little bit of a hassle.

Does anyone know of an appy that can do this? Or at least stear me toward someone who may be in the midst of developing such an appy?

I am about to try this out. It costs 10 dollars though! Just for a stupid in-call locker. Maybe someone knows of a free one?

Update: works just like it supposed to. After install goto Start>Programs> Phone Screen lock and change inactive to active and then press ok.

Once you start a call, the screen locks. On the Touch, the send/center d-pad/end buttons all funtion, but i think you have to push on your face really hard to push those lol.

Screen gets a semi-transparent white cover and screen is touch proof. Pretty cool app. Worth 10 bux? maybe it will be, but I havent really run into the face to phone contact problem yet.

When I use the phone on my Touch and Mogul, I turn the both around (the screen facing out).
Since the speaker is on the back of both and the mic is on the bottom, I have the back/speaker by my ear. This also helped in hearing as the sound is directed toward my ear. This also helped in not touching the screen with my face/ear. Using it this way only made sense to me. Trying using your Touch this way.

edit: I do have it on speakerphone as it is louder. When I hold it, my hand/palm does not touch the screen. I hold the edge with my finger tips and thumb and my hand is in a cup shape. My hand doesn't touch the screen at all.

thats actually a good tip...

but how about just get a quality BT headset???? (obviously this is for Touch users since the Mogul's BT sucks) =]

I recommend BT headsets because its safer for driving. I hate being in traffic and I look around and everyone around is on their cell phones... it scares me. Whats worst is when I witness people driving wrecklessly (cut people off, speeding, getting a inch close to the car in front, etc..) and they're on the cellphone.

Hmm do you put it in speakerphone because otherwise the sound is coming from the front speaker.

That locking app looks really cool, I might have to purchase it.

wow, great discussion! Thanks, folks! I'll have to give that appy a try. May well be worth the $10? I do like the suggestion of turning the phone over to use the speaker. However, handling the phone hand-to-screen will still cause issues.

Bluetooth is THE way to go. Unfortunately...they're ALL wayyyy to quiet for my ears. I have a Plantronics unit that does okay. It was decent with my PPC6700 but now it's a lot quieter through the Touch, for some odd reason. Not sure if anyone ever found the registry edit to fix that. But, in any case, I have tried LOTS of bluetooth earphones and not a one works for me. And that's a shame, because there are some really nice ones out there. My hearing in my right ear is about 25% to 30% worse than some folks and 70-75% worse in my left ear (so everything is done at the right). Nobody makes BT earpieces with the hearing impaired in mind.

On the touch, you can just turn the screen off during a call by pressing the top button. This will keep you from touching the screen and it will also save your battery. I wish there was something that would do this automatically.

Im pretty sure that S2U2 does this exact thing

S2U2? Whazzat? Or did I miss something here?

I downloaded the trial version of the software linked above and it does exactly what I want it to do: disengage the screen whenever a call is answered or placed and has a means of temporary disable so you can access other things during a call.
