How to Install Google Mail/Google Maps Java Application for your WM5 Device
This will allow you to install and run with a single shortcut the newly released Gmail Java application. Works on the ppc-6700 and 700wx and presumably any WM5 device. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Update: 11/21 - Added Gmaps.jad (NEW!) - Slimmed down files - Added New Security Certificate (No more AirTime PopUp:) ) (thanks G-funkster :thumbleft: ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Directions (1) Download the attached file: Java.zip (**you must be logged in to see the file!**) (2) Extact to your desktop or PPC directly --> 2 folders bin and lib can go anywhere including SD --> 1 file gmail.jad must go int your root directory (\ ) (3) Go to the bin folder and launch Emulator.exe (4) Click Install (5) Type in gmail.jad and select / from the drop down list For Google Maps, repeat same process but with Gmaps.jad instead! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BONUS: How do I make a shortcut directly to Gmail instead of launching Emulator.exe every time? Create your own shortcut from Emulator.exe then... go into the shortcut's properties: Under target path, put " " for the target path, then add -Xjam:run=1 if gmail is the first program on the list, -Xjam:run=2 if it's the second program, etc. (thanks to jambaj0e at pdaphonehome for writing this!) You'll need Resco Explorer to create the shortcut. How do I use a CommandLine/Create a shortcut? PLEASE READ HERE TO LEARN HOW! http://www.vijay555.com/?Help:Command_Lines Enjoy! 8) |
Great app, excellent tutorial. I like the Bonus idea.

Maintains "chat" style and has access to every feature of Gmail. I forward all my Gmail to Mail2web. However, I do not keep the last 2 years worth of email in Outlook, just the important stuff  So when I need to access last years email, or a starred document, this is an easy fast method to do so. It's just another option for people out there. Plus it works well. |
error
When I try to install the .jad file, I get this error:
"Error - Unable to read the jar file from location: http://gmail.com/app/v1.0.0/en/gmail-g.jar. Please check the MIDlet-Jar-URL." Any suggestions ? |

The zip file already has the jar file included, which implies that you need to tell the program to install it from your device. Specifically, you move the jar file to your root directory and then follow my above directions. That's a start  |
You need to be connected to the internet when you go to install the java app. I got the same error when I was not connected to my data connection. I tried it again having it connect to my data connection and everything worked.

I'm getting an error when extracting the "lib" file.
Error writing to target file! \Storage Card\lib\jclMidp20\AMS.jad It's probably a user error  Any help would be great! |
Extract to your desktop
Your getting an error on the extraction...
Extract to your desktop then copy the folders onto your SD card and the jad file to / Then launch and install following the instructions. |
Appreciate it, :thumbleft: I'll try that when I get home.

Since this is the definitive java thread, Mal, here's some tips.
1. You do not need the folder named 'source' found in 'lib\jclMidp20\source', save about 700k. 2. You do not need the file 'charconv-src.zip' found in 'lib\charconv-src.zip', save about 800k additional. GET RID OF THE CONNECTION POP-UP! Substitute the 'security.policy' file found in 'lib\security.policy' with the version i've modified, attached inside the security.zip file. You should no longer get that pop up for any java program, ever. That's it! make those modifications to the zip file above and you'll have a lean, mean java distribution. |
Hey g-funkster, thanks for the nice tips.
|
Sweet g-funkster! Thanks a lot. :thumbleft:
|
Nice G-Funkster!
I added that info/file to the 1st post for convenience :thumbleft: |
made the changes works perfectly! Thanks G-Funkster!

Is there a way to change the icon from the emulator one to a gmail-style icon?
I ask because I don't know. |

Long answer...not sure how or rather, it's an involved process. When I get a chance I'll see if I can look into it. |
Thanks Malatesta. It's just one of those things I guess. I hate sites that don't have favicons and I like all my icons to be unique.. Maybe I should learn myself.. :?

Thanks, this works great on the TyTn.
Also found Google Earth at this location: http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v1.3....d_MIDP2_L1.jad Only problem is this version of Java does not support jpegs, so you cant display sat images. |
OK, stupid question. I thought I had it loaded right, but now its not doing anything.
What files do I delete in order to get rid of this, so I can install in again from scratch? Re-installing hasn't worked, so I might as well as remove it and start clean and clear. |

I know what you are talking about though where it just "stops working" but I recently reinstalled with the 11/17 version and so far, so good. |
Can you tell me what the shortcut needs to read if I want to directly run a shortcut to the Gmail application on a Treo 750v?
It seems that the syntax above is for a different handheld? |

It is certainly not device-specific, what makes you think that? I mean did you even try it? |
I'll try it again...maybe I mistyped it. I figured the XJam was a different PDA!
|
Hi,
I followed all the directions and things went smoothly until the very last step. Gmail fails to launch. Is there anything I could be missing? Do you need more details? I really appreciate this forum. Thanks so much. |
I just ran emulator.exe again. It reinstalled Gmail and everything was peachy after that. No more allow air time message.
|
Gmail loads just fine but it tells me, "Sorry, the Gmail mobile app will not work on your phone. Your phone doesn't have the appropriate certificate to communicate with Gmail. Try accessing Gmail on your mobile browser at http://m.gmail.com"
What do I do? |

I just reinstalled after a hard-reset and it works fine for me. :? Update: Added Gmaps.jad for installing GoogleMaps to the package in case anyone wants that. |
ugh...this pisses me off...I just hard reset my apache and I still get the same error.
|
Shortcut presently reads "\My Documents\bin\emulator.exe"
What should I do with that part? Turn that into " "? I'm confused. |
gmail app on 700w
Does anyone know if this tutorial works on a Verizon Wireless Treo 700w?
Thanks, rmeche |

Hey guys, I got mine working flawlessly, but didn't bother with gmail since I don't even utilize it via desktop.
HOWEVER...I can't get 'satellite view' to work, is it because I reside in Calgary, Canada? With the previous Google Map versions, I was able to view it with ver 1.2, 1.3, 1.3.1, but not this currious gmaps.jad version. Any insight here is appreciated. James |
