Speed up Storage Card

2 Attachment(s)
Here is a great registry edit that dramatically speeds up your SD card... It is a simple .CAB file install... I DO NOT TAKE CREDIT FOR THIS... IT IS A CREATION OF XDA... Go here for the original XDA link...

Also, EtrnlWolf has uploaded OEM drivers for this .CAB edit.. I have them uploaded below in this post.. Thanks!

The screen shots below were graciously given to us by GuitarDoc... They detail all the registry edits that this .CAB entails... A more then just a few...

THE OEM.ZIP IS FOR ROM COOKING ONLY... DOWNLOAD JUST THE .CAB and run it on your phone to get the edit...

It seem to have helped on my Touch Pro.
TotalCommander is peppier when navigating the card's larger folders. :)

Well I dropped this into my 700wx running WM5. I've experienced no problems and access to the my card does seem snappier.

Hard to tell. I thought so, but playing music is probably not a good test. Weather Panel is on my card and did seem to repond better. I'll keep trying.

Thanks Diesel! I'll give it a shot on my Touch and report back.

Would this tweak be of any help to Diamond users?

dallas contractor 12-16-2008 12:08 PM

Re: Speed up Storage Card

No does not work with Diamond, Only storage cards.

BigDiesel07 12-16-2008 01:02 PM

Re: Speed up Storage Card

No.. It would help Diamond owners if they had Storage Cards... But Internal Storage is not helped...

are there any benchmark tests we can perform to confirm this working and not just the placebo effect?

Re: Speed up Storage Card

I have noticed a big increase in speed with it on my Touch. Pictures on my card load much faster. I can't really add much more than that yet, but I am definitely seeing a difference.

Re: Speed up Storage Card

I had a chance to check out more than pix since my last post. I initially had some problems with the camera album pulling up some wierd pix (album art) from media player that had somehow gotten synced, and I realized I didn't soft reset. So I soft reset and all I can say is wow. This one is the "magic bullet" for any SD files, videos in particular. playback speed is great, choppy vids that I had problems with before are clear. The other thing I tried is taking video and the same increase in write speed cuts the time of saving the vid dramatically. My vote for a kitchen OEM of this tweak.

I can confirm that for a Touch (Vogue) as well. I've noticed faster load times and quicker access of both pictures and video.

Just to make sure, do we install to the device or the memory card?

Re: Speed up Storage Card

Swapped up to an 8GB microSDHC the other day, coming from a 2 gig standard microSD... When copying my files OFF the card, to the internal storage, it was going at ~1300-2000 kb/sec... nice and speedy.

Put in the 8gb, and went to copy them back and got MAYBE 100kb/sec tops... it was horridly slow, especially since this is a Class 6 card and the 2gb was a class 2.

I'll give this a shot, I hope it helps.

Re: Speed up Storage Card

It's gonna make a big difference. It addresses the SDHC driver, which is not used with non-HC cards (non-HC have their own onboard driver) and rest assured there is a big difference. Try shooting a 1 minute video before and after. Like night and day!

lol.. How does increasing the SDHC driver have an impact on taking a video? And do you mean in play back?

The impact is in the time it takes to write to the card or playback from the card. I noticed a huge difference performing the experiment with video.

Thanks for the find.

Taken from Wikipedia...

Quote:

SDHC cards have SD Speed Class Ratings defined by the SD Association. The SD Speed Class Ratings specify the following minimum write speeds based on "the best fragmented state where no memory unit is occupied":[18]
  • Class 2: 2 MB/s
  • Class 4: 4 MB/s
  • Class 6: 6 MB/s
SDHC cards will often also advertise a maximum speed (such as 133x or 150x) in addition to this minimum Speed Class Rating. See section Speeds above for a further explanation. One critical difference between the Speed Class and the maximum speed ratings is the ability of the host device to query the SD card for the speed class and determine the best location to store data that meets the performance required. "Maximum speed" ratings are quoted by the manufacturers but unverified by any independent evaluation process.
