Can't you use the stock "tasks" aplication in combination with the calendar?

I find pocket informant to be the best planner/task manager, unfortunately it's not free.

I've been using TasksPlus, which is free. It lists your tasks on your home screen, not just the number of tasks you have. Can't remember for the life of me where I found it.
