ROM questions

Recently moved from a treo to the xv6800 on the Verizon network and have been reading through this form and the XDA-Developers forum trying to catchup on all the upgrades, mods and options. Verizon sales told me that the GPS is available and google maps and MS live search would work with it. I almost took the phone back till I did some searches and found these great sites.

A couple of basic questions that I have not found the answers to.

I see dcd and nueROM are the most commonly talked about custom ROMs on these forum. I see updated versions but don't easily find whats different/improved/fixed. Maybe I just haven't found the right page.

Without that I don't really know which is right for me. After locking my verizon phone to the sprint network last week I want to be more careful this go around.

Why would a Non Sprint user use the Sprint ROM (without customization) instead of a custom rom from dcd or nueROM? Maybe all the hype on this forum is from Sprint users that can now get previously custom ROM features in a carrier authorized ROM?

Is the only advantage of a kitchen over a ROM the ability to add apps at time of update or are there features that can only be updated through a kitchen as opposed to a base rom and then .CAB files? with the invent of the user customization does that replace the need for kitchens?

Re: ROM questions

Yea I'm in Kinda the same boat but it seems maybe there are some registry changes in the kitchens, as well...kinda tough to figure...And the fact that you cant ever uninstall the programs stuck in there by the kitchens kinda sucks but hey i'm not complaining...I have made some good roms and some bad ones some with conflicts some not ...It's kind of like Guess check refine...

Re: ROM questions

Those are really well thought out, well put questions that I really cannot answer because i'm not that experienced and i'm not going to pretend that i am like some people on both forums do. I've flashed many pre-cooked ROM's and I just learned the kitchen a couple of days ago mainly by reading countless threads and wikis and through trial and error, but I myself would like to know benefits of Pre mades and kitchens and hopefully someone nice enough will answer these questions.

The reason that VZW users were having to flash a sprint rom was so that they could get the Radio update from it. You do not have to run install the sprint rom. You can download the latest radio from FTP and put it on without the sprint ROM. But you must do all the steps in the correct order. These are the steps that worked for me. I don't take responsibilty for anyone who breaks thier phone.

1. Run an unlocker on your device. This unlocks the phone so that you can put a different Radio and a different ROM on it. The important thing is to be careful which one you run. DO NOT USE THE OLIPRO 1.20 spl. Use the 2.40 by olipro or the 2.47 by no2. Again do not get the 1.20 spl. The 1.20 and 2.40 are posted in the same thread and many people have chosen the wrong one inadvertently. (By the way the links are directly to the file you should need)

2. Put a radio on the phone. You can do it one of several ways. You can use the sprint rom without the customizations running. You can download the latest Radio (3.42.30) and place the file (radio) on an SD card, rename that file to TITAIMG.nbh. Place the SD card into the device and put the phone into bootloader mode (Power, camera, reset) and follow the prompts on the screen to update the radio. You can also look for the 3.35 radio on the FTP that is packaged in an installer. All you have to do is plug your phone to your PC and double click the icon, then follow the prompts. I prefer to flash with a SD card. Much easier and you don't have to worry about computer issues. By the way don't worry about booting the phone after a radio install because it won't. The radio you just put on is not compatible with the stock ROM.

3. Put a custom ROM on the phone. You have many to choose from. Check the Stickies at the top of the forum or search for no2chem and dcd's ROMs. You can also go to ppckitchen.org and download the kitchen and cook your own. This is my prefered method.
