Radios, PRI versions, and PRLs

I have been messing around with my Alltel PPC6800 and reading......ALOT. There are a few things that I am wondering about that I have not found much information on that I'm sure others may have also.

1. There are several newer 3.35+ radios available now. What are the benefits to the "newer ones"? Does it matter what carrier you have? Can you just upgrade the radio via the latest sprint upgrade method or just upgrade via the sd card method. If your phone is already unlocked via 2.40 olipro can you just download the newest sprint rom or do you have to relock first?

2. What is a PRI version? What do they do and how are they upgraded? Are they carrier specific?

3. I know PRLs are tower information for your carrier, I think . I noticed that when I went to Chicago and Atlanta I got GPS locks in seconds. When in my home area I'm in Nepal acording to my phone. If I were roaming on the sprint network while away and thats why my GPS worked so well could I just use a sprint PRL in my home area and would anyone ever know?

Thanks in advance...

Re: Radios, PRI versions, and PRLs

1. Newer is generally better. No you do not need to relock. You can flash sprints latest rom (don't let customizations run), or search around and you should be able to find a rom that just contains the radio that you're looking to upgrade to.

2. From here: "The PRI contains the settings for the various configuration items on the handset that may be network specific but not necessarily subscription specific, such as standard CDMA channels, slot cycle index,
default PRL, etc.". Yes it's carrier specific.

3. PRL stands for Prefered Roaming List. It tells your phone which towers to use if it can't find a home tower. Again it's carrier specific. To find the latest PRL for your network go to http://www.corolada.com/prl. Latest is usually better, but sometimes it's not. It really depends on your location, and how you prefer to roam. I think that a PRL can tell your phone where new towers for your network are, but don't quote me.

Hope this helps.

Re: Radios, PRI versions, and PRLs

http://www.corolada.com/prl/ is a great list. Is there one for canadian/international providers?
