Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
Seems to me like dzo is the main developer for this project and he has no interest in getting the Titan up and running - which is understandable since he has a Touch - so until someone else comes on board and starts developing, we're kinda stuck.
I will say though... HOLY CRAP is that web browser SMOOTH! There has *GOT* to be hardware acceleration going on because the page just flicks along! |

Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
So I managed to get Engadget up in the browser (yeah, it took quite a few tries - screen alignment isn't dead on either so it made it even more difficult) and I must say, the Google browser does things that Opera is just now starting to be able to do - namely, it automatically formats text in the page when you zoom in (Opera 9.5 formats it BEFORE you zoom in and after), making the page look just like it would on the desktop.
The browser is also highly responsive. I didn't see it loading images for 10 seconds or so like Opera 9.5 does. The Android app is pretty cool just because it shows that there is actual TRUE hardware acceleration running on the device. You can touch the globe and spin it faster, in a new direction, etc. I can not receive calls but I can make them. I am not even going to ATTEMPT to make a text message until someone fixes the keyboard. I've also noticed that the GUI seems to be more responsive if you have the keyboard slid out for some reason. Also if you can't get out of an app with the end key, press the power key and an option will come up to turn off the screen. If you click that option, it will exit the app and dump you back at the home screen 9 times out of ten. This is obviously still a really early pre-alpha release but I'm impressed with how far its come in such a short time and I'm really excited to see the full power unleashed on our devices and others in the near future! |
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
i have pulled up this page, i just can't sign in for some reason to try to post something from android. I have been able to send and receive calls and also i have sent and received text messages. Touch screen is not responsive at all but if you use the stylus it is much easier. can't wait until i can boot this! wish i knew what i was doing to help out but i will just have to wait and see. keep up the good work everyone

Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
Ok, I figured out how to sign into google talk on the phone (dev tools, XMPP Settings). I got a friend to send me a message and I saw it pop-up and put a Speech Bubble in the top bar. I can slide the bar down and see the new message window. But unable (or can't figure out) how to respond.
Has anyone messed with this yet? |
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
I just downloaded this and added to my memory card. Works like a charm on my Touch and runs on my Mogul as well although i can't do much on it because of the lack of button support but I have to agree with previous comments, this is a pretty sweet system and I can't wait to use it with a bit more regularity.

Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
dzo has fixed the keyboard alignment and made the SD driver 4 times faster. See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...4&postcount=33 The alignment for the actual keypresses is still SLIGHTLY off but the keyboard is in the right place at least! Now who wants to trace the GPIOS with HaRET? I sure don't wanna do it... but a working keyboard would be nice... or at least, ya know, the dpad arrows... lol. EDIT: Holy CRAP! dzo wasn't kidding! The new SD driver is incredibly fast! Now Google's browser makes Opera 9.5 look like crap in terms of speed by FAR! And *NO* out of memory errors - yes, even on Engadget... Now if only you had an address bar... lol. Searching from Google kinda sucks. EDIT 2: You can also end calls using the end call button now. Also, if you go to the dev tools, then development settings, you can turn on the CPU usage meter. Its nice to see that the OS itself uses very little CPU cycles when its idle. Windows Mobile sure doesn't... |
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
When trying to do anything with the web browser, I get a "network error unknown host" message and when using maps, I get a "oops! the network seems to be down for now. we'll keep trying, though." Any help with this?

Try replacing the zImage with the one at: http://cs-alb-pc3.massey.ac.nz/vogue/zImage SD is 4 times as fast and the kbd should be in the right place. I don't have a titan so it's not easy to figure out the differences between it and vogue. To get the buttons and kbd working you will have to trace the gpios using haret. The kbd is probaby similar to the kaiser kdb so you could use that as a start. http://forum.xda-developers.com/imag...tons/quote.gif |
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
Make sure that you have an active data connection before you launch HaRET. :)

stang, there was really no reason to repost that... I linked to that exact post in my previous post...

Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
still cannot get past the command line because of that same sd error others have said, I tried multiple cards (none are SDHC) and all are formatted fat32 using nuespl to do the formatting, does that format it slightly differently than windows would and cause the error? I really would like to get this up and play with it.
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
could be nuespl's formatting process. When I tried installing nuespl I first tried using a non-HC card formatted by windows. It didn't work, so I formatted it with nuespl and it worked. Then I tried using the card in another non-PPC phone and the card couldn't be read. So then I had to format the card again using the other phone and it worked. So maybe try reformatting the card in windows or another phone.

Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh snap... I have new zimage file from xda posts and now SDHC works. More to come soon. |
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
Still won't recognize my 2GB card (formatted through card reader, and on PPC for FAT32). Was finally able to boot with my 4GB card with the latest zImage. Then I get stuck at the black screen with the red animation... where it then starts vibrating nonstop after a few minutes.
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
running on my mogul. 1gb card and n2c 5067 rom. Very nice. Glad the keyboard got fixed. Im already wishing i could replace WM on my phone with this!
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
1 Attachment(s)
for those who are using SDHC cards extract the attached zImage.zip file.
back up your existing zImage file on your phone and copy the new one to your phone. Should boot up correctly now. |

Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
I think I may have formatted it in Windows before, but I honestly don't remember. I wouldn't think the issue is related to formatting via nueSPL, but who knows.
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
If you're running no2chem's pre7 or pre8, just plug in the USB and select mass storage... then find the drive in windows and format that way (right-click the drive letter if you didn't know)
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
YES! You Will need to make sure the card of formatted FAT32.
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
In any case, its not of much use to us right now anyway. The device randomly freezes after a few minutes. Until that is resolved, we won't really get to do much but see it run on our devices and maybe browse one or two web pages.
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
Thanks EtherealRemnant, it turns out I had my wi-fi on. So, now, how do I get maps to work? It shows the data arrows on the top bar "sending/receiving" but nothing changes on the map.
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
It takes a minute to start actually downloading images, wILLk0r3. You may also be zoomed in too far. Hold the stylus on the screen until the zoom box appears and zoom out.
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
Cool, thanks again, I got that to work. Now, last two questions about the maps function, is there any other function on the maps or is it just basic googlemaps view? And, how do you exit maps without having to soft reset? Aside from that, I've had no other issues with this and aside from the mentioned bugs, it's pretty cool!
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
Sometimes when you hit the end call button, it will minimize the app and take you to the main screen... there isn't currently a way to exit an app that I'm aware of.
From what I've seen, its just basic google maps view. |
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
Weird, it seems to exit from maps when it wants cuz I re-booted, started Android, opened maps, presses the end key and it went back to the Android main screen. Thanks for your help!
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
Yeah the end key functionality is really pretty hit and miss. Don't know why.
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
Cuz someone needs to spend some time writing hardware button drivers for our device! I believe the touch screen is also kind of wonky because the vogue touch panel is different as well.
The keyboard, for example, doesn't show up weird on Vogue, or so I'm told. What we need is some people with technical skills in here working with the lower level hardware drivers. |
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
well, i got bored at work today and decided to give the new zImage a shot.
i figured since i couldn't get my 512SD card wouldn't mount, maybe with the new zImage and SDHC compatibility, i could finally run this up and running. so i tried and it worked like a charm!...very cool. its a bit unstable, i can only seem to play for ~5mins at a time before the end key can no longer back me out and i am forced to soft reset, but cool nonetheless...i will be keeping an eye out for future updates....thanks to all of those involved....you rock :headbang: |

I am having trouble Telnet'ing and SSH'ing into my phone as dzo stated we could. Has anyone else been able to do this?
By the way, I know we all love android, but what about the possibility of a distribution like Xanadux or something more developed and stable. We have the tools now and I think we should explore all of our options :) Oh, and if anyone wants to attempt to map the GPIO functions http://handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/H...0Documentation this page has a lot of documentation. Quite honestly I don't know what to do after the buttons have been mapped but for anyone with a little more experience have at! |

Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
I was trying to get linux running but I am not a kernel hacker. Therefore at this point I am not much help.
I was trying to edit the android images to get GPE running but they will not boot. I know that I need to edit the initrd but that is part of the kernel and I haven't had much luck. |
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
I wonder if we could get the SD driver from dzo, and try compiling our own kernel. I dream of the day we can run a full distribution of Linux on our Titans...
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
man this thing is sweet.. id just love to say goodbye to windows mobile!
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
formatted all of my sd cards to fat32 a second time using windows, still no luck... I wonder if I have a different hardware version on my sd reader like someone was mentioning before...](*,)
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
this is so out of wack that i'm wondering if it's possible to become stable and usable. that's jus how far gone it is. it reminds me of an Atari system.
|
Re: Linux/Android working on Titan
It's not really that far gone, actually. The main problems are just hardware mappings and drivers, and surprisingly a lot of the hardware drivers are working fine. I think if I had time to work on it I could probably get the keyboard working; I've worked on linux ports to handhelds before. Unfortunately, between school and work... all we really need, though, is someone with some linux kernel development experience and a mogul handheld to spend some time on it, and I can see this as becoming a full blown fully usable replacement OS.
