I noticed that the mogul has 256 mb of flash, has anyone tried to reallocate the partitions to make more program memory? if the sd can be programed to hold the rom then the rom on the flash could be removed thus freeing up space...right?
Very wrong, actually. Flash ROM and system memory are extremely different from each other, with huge differences in speed, and write limits to the flash. As well, installing applications to the external memory is usually very problematic, not to mention unreliable. You pop out your card for any reason and your system crashes. No good. But it's also likely a lot slower than the flash memory in the phone. So add to that actually trying to boot your entire OS from it, and you're in trouble (assuming that was even physically possible). Your ideas are nice in theory, but completely impossible in application.

As for your main question, a "smaller ROM" won't leave you with more system memory. It'll just take up less storage space. no2chem's current ROMs boot with something in the range of 27MB of free system memory, which is fantastic. Otherwise, yes, build your own using the kitchen and remove everything you don't need. But I doubt it will improve your available system memory by much, if at all. And WM6.1 is in my experience (especially in the latest builds) MORE stable than 6.0, and with better memory management. You won't see a tenth as many out-of-memory errors as in 6.0.

Re: smallest rom AKA "spartian"

I haven't seen ANY out of memory errors on the newer 506* builds...

...

My programs just close themselves. :P

lol, that's true. I've actually seen two or three out-of-memory errors on my phone since going to 6.1, but that's a drastic improvement. I haven't had a lot of auto-closing lately, though. I'm often surprised by what apps are still open on mine when I look.

Re: smallest rom AKA "spartian"

Yeah its rare that things auto-close... seems to me that it tends to happen whenever PIE is open... at least with my config.

But I agree - I've definitely been surprised... I had Opera Mini running in Jbed and Opera Mobile 9.5 1126 running at the same time and both were totally responsive - that was with HTC Home, text messages, and a few other small apps running in the background.

Re: smallest rom AKA "spartian"

So far I have reflashed 4 or five times (so many choices!) and my little monster is working great, not to mention having the extended rom unlocked is nice for the extra space. BTW the mogul can read the 8 gig microsd (best buy got them for $75). I will start to work on creating my own rom to put me back to my favorite setup. Glad my main job gives me plenty of time online to read. Total commander will do the job I think, but I could be wrong...
