GPS on alltel 6800 - easy way

This is to make it so the Internal GPS works on an Alltel ppc-6800, without using hacked roms. unlock tools or anything along those lines. its an official ROM that has a small patch.

Make sure you have updated your ROM with the HTC/Alltel ROM from the website and the patch.

ROM: http://216.139.227.226/alltel/RUU_TI..._PPST_Ship.exe
50MB

patch:
http://johniii.tripod.com/Enable_GPS_Alltel_ppc6800.zip <-- must copy and paste into browser
80KB

copy the contents of the 'Enable_GPS_Alltel_ppc6800.zip' to your phone.
Install each of 4 files one at a time to the main memory (do not install on storage card).
start with file 1 then 2 then 3 then 4
some of the install files will only make the screen 'flick' this is good. move on to the next one.
after they are all done soft reset the phone.
use google maps. (let windows manage my gps)
start/settings/system
gps settings.
com 4
4800 baud

no hardware port
------------------------------------------

im just trying to sum up stuff that took me 2 hours. this should take you 10-30 mins.
more info on this is at the post:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread...ghlight=alltel

go there to see the pros and cons of this procedure and more discussion.

Re: NEW ALLTEL ROM 3.35 is now on HTC Site!!!

To all with problems...

1. Install the xda security patch first... It won't work without that. (Soft Reset)

2. Install the .cab with the gps files. (Soft Reset)

3. Make sure to turn phone location on under phone settings.

4. Under settings make sure GPS is set to COM4.

5. Use Google Maps to get a signal. If you're outdoors you will get a lock faster than if indoors. Sometimes inside I get no signal.

If there is a time that you get a signal and other times you do not, try and do a soft reset. I have found that there are times when it works flawlessly and times when I need to do reset in order for it to work. I use TomTom and it works perfectly, maybe only an error of less than 10 yards.

(To use TomTom you need to start the GPS in Google Maps first to initiate the Reciever and then "OK" out of it and open TomTom. )

Hope I helped.

I'm finding I have do a soft reset or full power down for the GPS to work next time I turn it on. I didn't have this problem with the Sprint ROM.

I'm currently trying to research this to see if it's in the OS or the radio, but just curious if anyone else has the same problem.
When I get the satellites for the first time it works good but when I try again it only shows the satellites and no lock then I push the button on top to sleep and then back on and it then shows they have locked. Don't know if that is a problem or what??

It can tell when I'm walking inside my house. The kids love watching the little blue dot follow us around. I think it just must have to do with the area, although I had no probs in Vegas either. Hope you get it working! After the most recent posting about how to upgrade the roms, and having successfully baked a few myself, I can hardly believe I got so frustrated trying to flash before. Its crazy.
Thanks all.
What did you do to get it to work so easily?

Re: NEW ALLTEL ROM 3.35 is now on HTC Site!!!

hey guys. i have an alltel6800 PPC. i have been messing with it for over a month to enable GPS. here is what worked. I already had ROM version 3.35.671.9. my radio is 3.37.20. i downloaded and installed the enable gps program and ran all 4 in order like they said. soft reset. make sure you go into setting and turn on 911 location. ON. then and here is the key. it has to be under external gps settings. com4 on the first screen. next screen hardware(no port) and 4800 baud. that is when i started working when i changed to that. VERY important. enjoy all!!
