An Easy Guide to Upgrading
 

There are 'basically' three parts to the software that runs your phone.
1. There is the SPL / bootloader.
2. There is the Radio ROM.
3. There is the System ROM.
All three must line up correctly.

1. If you are using code prior to 3.35.65 then you need either have the following SPLs:
>a. The ReLocker 1.06 SPL if running official carrier released code
>b. The unLocker (original) 1.20 if running custom built roms
2. If you are using 3.x+ code then you need either:
>a. The reLocker if upgrading to the unofficial carrier released rom
>b. the unLocker (new) 2.40 if running custom built roms

Path to 3.35+ and beyond!!

Special Notes:
*1: Make sure that you have a complete backup and/or sync
before proceeding.

* 2. In some cases a custom dialer will keep you from performing
the following steps. To resolve this, you must do a hard reset.

* 3. To perform a hard reset: press and hold both soft keys and then
press and hold the reset button until a screen comes up asking if you
want to perform a full reset. Press 'R' to reset. Then <spacebar>.

* 4. Once your phone reboots, press the reset prior to the
customizations. This will save you time since there is no need for
the customizations to run since you are about to blow it away.

Retrieve Provisioning Data:

1. Get your ESN, MSID, A-Key, Security, and M.IP info:
>>> a. dial ##778#, that will launch the EPST configuration menu
Note: Some carriers do not need the last #, so just ##778
You will need to click edit and enter your MSL #.
Do not to edit any information at this point.
> b. select view
> c. make note of your ESN (Hex) value
> d. make note of your ESN (Dec) value
> e. make note of your MSID value (looks like a 10 digit tel number)
> f. select <view info> and select A-Key
>>>>Some carriers leave this blank, some need this info
>>>>If there is info here, make note of it now
> g. click view info and Security. Write all these settings down.
> h. click view info and select M.IP, again record these settings.
> i. click <cancel> to exit the configuration menu

2. Get your EPST
> a. download this file here .. this is the getspl file (in zip form)
> b. This program GETSPC.exe is very simple to use.
>>>>run the GetSPC.exe on your phone and in the Input field
>>>>type in your ESN(Hex) in the input field (you wrote this down earlier)
> c. press <go>
> d. the number produced in the output field is your MSLNumber (EPST unlock code)
> e. exit the application

**You should now have noted these 3 (4) items:
MDN: your 10 digit tel number
MSID: another 10 digit tel number (for some carriers it's the same as your MDN)
A-Key: required by certain carriers otherwise blank
MSL: a 6 digit number that you got when you ran the GetSPC.exe
Note: The great thing about using the following procedure is that typically
you won't even have to use the information you just obtained, but better safe than sorry.

Upgrade to 3.35.651.2:

3. If running pre-3.16 code,
>a. run the relocker
(don't worry about getting out of the bootloader - tri-color screen)
*Note: There has been a bit of confusion on this.
If you are running a stock (meaning factory provided) rom and have never installed a custom rom, then just skip this step since you have probably
never unlocked your phone.
* If unsure, then run this - no harm in doing so.

4. Run the Unofficial carrier released rom 3.35.651.2 (this has the radio also)
>Click here for Sprint 3.35.651.2 Release
>This has the correct radio as well --that is why I recommend going this route first
*Note: Do not be concerned if you hear and see your phone reboot
and disconnect from your computer. This may will happen multiple times as it
loads the new rom. This process can take about 10mins or so to complete.

*Further Explanation: The reason for this step is to easily and safely get you
into the new rom(s) with the updated radio installed. Don't be concerned if you are on another provider. You will take care of that when you download a custom rom built specifically for your provider network.

Install a Custom ROM:

5. If wanting to install a custom rom:
>a. run the unLocker for 3.x and above
(don't worry about getting out of the bootloader - tri-color screen)
**Special Note: It has been my experience that after all the preceding
steps are complete, sometimes you will need to do a full reboot of your PC.
You only need to do this if the unLocker can not communicate correctly with
your phone.

6. Download a custom rom of your choosing.
>One that is real popular is DCD's .. click here to give it a try
>Another one that is very basic (no extras) is by No2Chem .. click here (this is what I personally use)
Warning: These 'upgrade' custom ROMs may sometimes be buggy. But it can still be fun.

7. Now you'll need to run a Rom Update Utility (RUU).
Some of the custom roms come as executables, so all you have to do is
run them. Others are just a single file that ends in .nbh.
For those you will need a RUU.
> a. Click here to download an empty RUU
> b. Copy the .nbh file of your custom rom into the RUU folder
> c. Make sure there is only one .nbh file in the folder
> d. Double click RomUpdateUtility.exe to begin the update

Verify Provisioning Data:

8. Dial ##MSL# - this is the 6 digit code you retrieved in step 2 above
> a. first select view (because if your info is correct,
>>> we don't want to accidentallymess it up
> b. verify that the MDN and MSID fields match your info from above
>>> i. if the info matches, select cancel and proceed to step 9
>>> ii. if the info does not match, then redo step 8 and select edit,
>>>>> input the correct MDN and MSID and then select <menu> and <ok>
>>>>> your phone will now reboot

9. If your phone had an A-Key then do this step, otherwise proceed to step 10
> a. dial ##778#
> b. select <edit>
> c. input your MSL (6 digit code retrieved in step 2 above)
>>> **Please note, you can mess up your phone if you change the wrong fields - use with caution**
> d. select <view info> and select A-Key
> e. input the A-Key from info above (if required)
> f. select menu and select <OK>
> g. your phone will reboot

10. Now we will run the IOTA (Internet/Data Over the Air) setup
> a. go to Start/Settings/Phone
> b. verify that your vx mail number is correct (if not then you have missed a step above)
> c. select the services tab
> d. scroll down to Internet and select, then click <Get Settings>
> e. click the <Start> button
>>> this should initiate the IOTA for your phone
*Note: Some of the custom roms do not include the IOTA.
*When you click the <Start> button and you don't get a message back
indicating that your phone is being updated, the you will need to unlock your
extended rom and run the IOTA.cab from there. Click here for instructions on how to unlock the extended cab. Post 4 has the info.

11. Verify your services
> a. make an outbound call
> b. receive a call
> c. connect to the Internet

12. Congratulations, you have successfully updated your phone - Have fun!

first of all, thank you thank you thank you. i've been slowly picking this stuff up over at XDA but it gets confusing once the top post gets edited. one step confuses me a bit though:
of course i'm running a stock rom. i'm a "first timer". i know it says to skip this step but it gets more confusing later on as far as unlocking/relocking. i really want to try DCD's 2.2 rom but i'm still a little skittish.

Not to worry .. just have fun.
Ok, so if you are running a stock rom, then just skip this step. You only need to run the relocker if you have been using custom 2.xx roms. Since you haven't, then skip it and go to step 4.
It would be silly to ever make a promise or guarantee, but if you follow these steps, you should have a great experience.

right, but i'm on verizon so running the next step isn't necessary either. i just need the corerct radio (3.27) right? so i can upgrade the radio and then install DCD's ROM?

this is the most confusing part. because some places say to do it in this order and some say otherwise.

DCD's ROMs are great. So just follow the steps through and then you don't even need to be concerned with the radio thing at all. You will just know it will work correctly because when you install the unofficial released 3.16 package that includes the 3.27 radio.
It is a bit scary at first, but just relax and follow the procedure. You will have great results. :)

Ok i am on the bootloader tri colored screen and I am attempting to load my old rom because the new 6.1 will not load up. I unlocked my phone with TITA100 SPL-1.20 Olipro. Does this make any sense?

Just start at step 3.
Then go back to step 1 & 2 to get your phone codes.
Then follow the procedure from step 4 on.

Yeah .. that is what is sounded like for sure.

will do. just out of curiousity (and i think i read this elsewhere but i want to be sure) you just do a hard reset to get back to the stock rom? does that break things once the radio is updated?

if i decide to go back to stock, will i need to reflash the radio?

i just want a clean way to back out if i decide the new rom isn't for me or if some show-stopping feature doesn't work.

Good questions.
But you are inaccurate about what a hard reset does.
A hard reset restores back to the 'factory' load of the rom that is installed.
Therefore, if you have a custom rom onboard then you go back to a fresh install of
that rom. Not back to the rom that was on your phone when you purchased it.

Now, in answer to your question about going back to an official carrier released rom,
such as 2.17.
1. Follow the guide through step 3
2. Now, while still in the bootloader screen on your phone, run your carrier released rom (such as 2.17)
**This will also install the correct radio for that software rom**
3. Then proceed to steps 8-11, because going backwards WILL erase those settings in your phone.

ok that's what i've been trying to figure out. didn't make sense that you flash a ROM and then magically the factory ROM is still there. one overwrites the other. i might try it this week. got some big stuff coming up at work though and i'd hate to lose regular phone service or my Exchange access. i already downloaded a copy of the verizon stock ROM so if i have to go back to it, i can.

Use this guide to assist you. On step 6 I have included a couple of links
to some very popular and very good roms that now are running with WM6.1.

Is there something else you need help with that I haven't covered?

Great decision to have the stock rom that you can go back to if so desired.
I had a buddy run through the guide last night and it took him roughly 45 mins or
so from when he started to when he was totally finished. Of course there were still
some tweaks that he did afterward.

One question...I have successfully got 3.16 up and running, I rebooted my pc, and when I run the unlocker everything goes good until remove and insert the usb cable. I can't activesync again when my phone is in the bootloader. Is it okay to still run the unlocker without an activesync connection? I've tried multiple times and rebooted my pc and phone.

I had this problem when I was trying to unlock the stock ROM as well.

you know what would make it perfect is a "live" (updated) list of the official stock roms released from each carrier so that people have a sure-fire means to revert to stock if they decide this is not gonna work out.

i think first-timers will be reassured knowing the stock roms are easily found...

Invalid Vendor ID
 

I must be missing something. I have the Verizon xv6800 and this is my first try at flashing (thanks for the writeup). When I get to step 4, the RUU starts, I hear the beeps, the phone blanks out for a moment, both the PC and phone show 0% - then it finally comes back and says "invalid vendor ID" - so no 3.16 ROM and no custom ROM. What should I try to get the 3.16 loaded? Thanks is advance

I'm a first timer and this thread really helped me make the flash. Great job. I would suggest other first timers to download their stock roms on their own. If you have a mogul then go to HTC. Couldn't be easier and you should have your own copy.

When I try to download the file it wont let me, I looked at the URL on internet explorer and it says: ftp://up.ppcgeeks....n/roms/RUU.rar

Im missing some stuff, someone please help me, I want to upgrade rom today :(!!!!!

OK, I thought I would give this a try since there was a First Timers guide and all. I guess I have first timers problems...

I got my Mogul when it first came out, before it hit the stores. When it hit the stores I updated the ROM via the RUU program, which worked fine even though I was on Vista. As of this morning I was on the latest ROM/RUU from the HTC web site. No problems...

Following these intructions, I got the information from #1 & #2. Since I have a stock Sprint ROM, I skipped #3 as it describes. Now all my problems are in #4. When I ran it is started then stopped saying that there were communication problems. The mogul was in the bootloader. I started again, and it went for a while, then errored out suggesting that I follow some instructions to pull out the battery, etc. I did that but it lost communication again.

At this point the boot loader says TITA100 MFG / SPL-2.03.1000 / CPLD-9.

Now when I run the RUU I get error 328. Restared it with XP compat but no difference. Searching the forums brought up a reference to this post (http://www.modaco.com/content/Window...ltimate-guide/). It didn't make sense to me since I have already had success with Vista, but I followed it anyway. Now the RUU does not error but it did hang at 0% for the last few hours.

Now what?

Wow. That really stinks.
Try unplugging your phone and then rebooting the computer.
Turn off your phone and then back on. This should put you back into the
bootloader screen (tri-color).
I have noticed that Vista can get picky sometimes and just needs a reboot.
I have only used Vista for all my flashes. And only once did I absolutely have
to reboot it. But that did solve the problem.

Go back to step 3. Re-run the reLocker.
Once you get 1.06 SPL Bootloader installed either run the Unofficial Sprint 3.16 release
again. Or install an official carrier released rom (2.09/2.17).
