Getting flooded with error messages-Can't use phone - Page 2

An hour and 40 mins later, i am back and working fine. Lost a little data, but setting it back up gives me something to do at meetings.

The problem here is EXT4. You're on Midnight ROM 4 which uses EXT4. EXT4 is a journaling filesystem, so changes are buffered. Hard shutdowns such as when phone falls and battery pops out, when the phone locks and you have to shut it off, or one other case I'll outline below can cause the journal to go bad and the filesystem to become partially corrupt. I don't think Android does an fsck when it boots, but you might be able finnegale it into doing so.

I've purchased the 2x batteries + wall charger from EBAY, so I switch batteries all the time. I hardly ever use the microUSB port. Here's a word of advice:

When switching batteries, do a regular software power down(hold the power button ,hit power-down then ok) and WAIT FOR THE PHONE TO VIBRATE. Only when you feel the vibrate is the phone actually off, and it's ok to swap batteries.

Some roms have Journaling off for extra speed by default..I see latest v5 has Journaling on.idk about the previous versions....so it might have been that journaling was just not on...

ya that build he was using its off, rob is now cooking both ways for people who prefer it on.

I too have had this issue with EXT4 and have been able to recreate it. I noticed this problem a few times. In my case it has happened each time I allowed the battery to completely die while I was using it. Usually when In the middle of playing a game and let the phone completely die. When I plug it in to the charger and reboot, I am faced with nothing but multiple FC's all over the place and is unusable. It happens everytime in this condition, so I never let my battery completely drain anymore with EXT4.

It happened to me this morning. Battery drained to zero and when I plugged it in and restarted it was fc's like no tomorrow. I ended up having to reflash. Tried just to wipe, but that didn't fix it.

ya playing "gorilla bob" did it to me, i just couldnt stop playing.

Yep, I brought this issue to attention when EXT4 was introduced, but nobody seemed to want to believe me.

Should I flash MidNIGHT ROM v5 with journaling on or off. Sounds like in version 4 it was off, so journaling wasn't the problem. My goal is less problems. Thanks for the advice and education?

well dave i am running both versions on my epics just to see if i have issues and 2days now i dont have any issues but now i dont let battery die anymore so my advice is just that, dont kill battery. i have 3 batteries so im ok with that but if you need extra battery there really cheep on ebay and seem like ones i got are actually samsungs and were 9$ to buy. imo your issue seemed like corruption somewhere and like i posted in robs thread i would start from scratch INCLUDING a new backup.
