I sync my contacts with gmail, otherwise cwm nadroid backup works well for backing up all data when flashing roms. The disadvantage of nandoid is sometimes you will get fc's after the restore. My Backup Pro is also a good app as well. The advantage of that is it will backup just txt, call logs, and contacts if that's all you want.

Re: backing up contacts

Really the best way is to make sure that all the contacts you have on your phone are also in your Gmail contacts. With the ROM I am running whenever I add a new contact it asks me it I want to save it to my phone or to Google, and I always pick Google. That way no matter what happens my contacts will be cloud-based and will always be there. If you save them just to your phone and you lose your phone you're screwed, unless you regularly back up your SD card to your PC.

If your contacts are in your Gmail account you don't have to sync anything. It does it automatically.

Where do you want to bring your contacts in from? If they are on your google account then goto Settings/Accounts&sync and make sure sync is on, then tap on the account and make sure the "sync contacts" box is checked.
