It's done from the sd card. You could try exporting from phone to SD them import from SD to gmail.

Re: backing up contacts

Make sure you are using the same Gmail account that you used when you registered your phone. Every Android phone is linked to a single Gmail account - you can have multiple Gmail accounts (I do) but only one is linked to your Android phone. If you have contacts in your Gmail account they should automatically sync with your phone, and vice versa.
