I actually came up with a better way to deal with SMS so that I don't have 36K of them on my phone any more.
1) I use https://market.android.com/details?i...SBackupRestore to back up nightly in xml to the sd card.
2) I use a perl scribe to combine all the xml files to a new, larger file with no dups
3) https://market.android.com/details?i...oggles.smssync I use that to back up my SMS/MMS/call logs to my gmail

So now, whenever I reflash, I keep my SMS low. It's actually at 3-4K right now.
