Hmmmmm. interesting.

After restoring user data I re-installed ROM Manager. Then I went into Clockwork via ROM Manager to flash a battery mod, changed my mind and didn't flash anything, rebooted phone and it hung on the big yellow "4G" boot screen.......forever. Pulled the battery, went back into Clockwork and restored user data again (making it as if I had never installed ROM Manager) and everything works fine again.

It would appear that there is a major conflict with ROM Manager.
