[12/04/08] Please delete un-needed subscriptions

EVERYONE:

Part of our server load issues have been related to emails. While the "Instant Email Notification" is nice, it can also cause a huge load on the server. Imagine if there's a thread with 500 replies and half of those people are subscribed with email notifications, that would be 250 emails the server has to send out at once.

PLEASE go through your subscriptions here and delete ones that you no longer need.

You can see if you're setup for email notifications by looking in the Notifications column.

You can delete multiple subscriptions by using the check boxes on the right side and using the drop-down box at the bottom.

Please do this as soon as you can, especially if you're subscribed to any large threads that gets lots of replies.

Also, please try to do this every once in a while to help the server load. Help us help you :)

Thanks!

EDIT: Also make sure you check all pages. There's probably more than one page of subscriptions.

EDIT 2: If you have alot of subscriptions and you know you don't want any of them, post a reply in this thread and ask me to delete them all, I can do it with the click of a button.

subscriptions without email notification are ok to keep right?

No email notification for me, amigos.

I've always found that to be uber-annoying

and obviously very

bandwidth unfriendly.

Yeah. Earlier when the server was timing out I saw that there were 1000 emails in the queue and the Exim email server was using a huge chunk of the CPU.

So subscriptions with no notifications is fine, just try to clean up the ones that are emailed.

It wants you to view this thread. Once you do that message should go away.

Re: [12/04/08] Please delete un-needed subscriptions

I think I got this for exactly ONE thread, but looking over all my subscribed threads now, no checkboxes checked...smart of you guys to inform everyone of this, though. Good luck. If you need contributions for server expenses or anything I'm sure many generous souls here would help out, this is a very valuable site to many folks.

I'll see if there's a hack for something like that.

I don't remember exactly, but when I first signed up, every thread I posted in it auto-subscribed me. Is this set to default-off? I only subscribe now to hibby-posts. :)

It was setup so every member was auto-subscribed w/o email notifications (unless you changed it yourself after registering).

I don't think there's a need for that, so I just set everyone's to No Subscription. You can change it in your UserCP if you want, and you can still subscribe to individual threads manually just like always.

Frosty, the link was dead. It was directing me to ppcgeeks.com/ the thread and not forum.ppcgeeks.com You might want to check the link. Also, every thread I post in I get a sub to...

Great job on the site =D>and I figured there had to be something bogging down your servers because I have received numerous 'server is too busy' which is (as I know all too well) a webmaster's nightmare :protest:.

I hate e-mail notifications; I check constantly on my USERCP for updates but hate e-mail notices.

Some people said this and some said it started working fine...as long as you view this thread it should go away. It might depend on how you access the site.

If you access it through ppcgeeks.com I think you get a dead link, but if you use forum.ppcgeeks.com it'll work. Or it should work once you click on the Forums link at the top of the page.

ended up here after getting this msg...

The administrators want you to view a thread before you continue to browse the forum.

You can view the thread here.
must admit that was a cool trick, but i also dont subscribe for email notifications. although i do have several hundred subscriptions, they shouldn't be affecting the server load. today i've actually been going thru and unsubscribing from the ones i dont want to follow anymore, because as pointed out, it used to auto-subscribe you to every thread you ever posted in. Anyway, thanks for the heads up frosty...

No problem. I just made it so that everyone had to read this thread lol.

Re: [12/04/08] Please delete un-needed subscriptions

here is an idea for those who wanna keep track of certain threads...i have AOL but im sure each internet provider has something similar...i just went into the threads that i had subscriptions for and wanted to keep on eye on...and saved them to my favorites on AOL...so they are still one click away, without having them all on here...

even tho i dont have it set to get email notified...hell when i did i was getting emails every couple seconds...lol...but i cleared them off here anyways...thanks FROST

Interesting - I have 15 pages of subscriptions, but don't know that I ever did anything to subscribe to any of them.

But, I'm getting no emails.

Anyway - please delete them all. And, if there's something I need to do to not subscribe in the future, please let me know.

Thanks for a great site!
