I'm thinking now the issue is with PDANet v2.0...I downgraded to v1.8 and everything is back to normal...e-mailed author...

Take a look at http://www.blackcats-games.net/ and http://www.myspleen.net/

Both went tracker first, forum second; but they show how integration between the two can be made; including authentication. I think it'd be just as easy to have a tracker with separate auth.
