BT GPS for Omnia i910

Ok. Considering investing in one of these rather than wait things out for IF Verizon will actually unlock the internet GPS. Would like to keep the cost down though. Anyone using any of these such as the Holux GPSlim 240, 1000, or I think 1200?

Any other suggestions within say the $30 to $45 range?

Re: BT GPS for Omnia i910

I have the HOLUX GPSlim236. Works just fine. I am sure you can get your hands on one for under $50 without breaking a sweat.

Now by default the External GPS ison is not in the SYSTEM menu, add the following registry edit

Modify the
HKLM -> ControlPanel -> GPS settings
by removing the Redirect entry.

Once that is done, you can pair the GPS reciever to the Omnia and use whatever GPS app you like. Google Maps and MS Live Search are good things to try out becasue they are FREE downloads. Right now I like Live Search better.

I too hope that VZ will release the update that pops the GPS loose soon. And becase the chatter on it being cracked like the Touch Pro has died down. I think that VZ will release it before any viable crack is issued. So I dusted off my HOLUX and it works just fine

Enjoy!

Thanks Shaz for the info. I really am mixed right now on whether to get an external gps or continue waiting it out. I lived w/o it on my apache and never bothered, however I really like google maps - just to name one proggy associated with gps, and would like to be able to finally have this function on my device.

Re: BT GPS for Omnia i910

I am hoping as well that VZW releases the GPS soon, but as far as BT GPS, I haven't heard any BT issues with the Omnia at all (there was one car....Accura I think) so basically there haven't been any bad devices reported, so I would say if you find one for the price that works for you try it out!!

Ended up bidding on and winning the Holux GPSlim 240 Bluetooth GPS Receiver for $31 shipped on Ebay. Should have it in 5-7 days.

Re: BT GPS for Omnia i910

I've used a number of different bt gps units successfully with the Omnia. My only gripe is they only allow two ports for this so I occasionally have to delete a profile to use something else. You don't necessarily have to do the registry hack to get the external gps icon as most software will connect without changing any of the settings it will reveal. You may however want to install one of the many "GPSInfo" type of apps (generally supplied or available from the h/w vendor) that allow for troubleshooting.

lazer9...Let us know how the Holux goes? I am thinking of just holding out for the GPS to be unlocked, but that isn't a bad price at all!!

Re: BT GPS for Omnia i910

Just wanted to update, I received the Holux GPSlim 240 Bluetooth GPS Receiver and got it up and running with Google Maps and Live Search. Only tested a little in the house last night but seems to work fine. Actually I was able to get it recognized after pairing and adding Serial Port (2) and then setting up in the mentioned programs to that port, however I am just now applying the reg edit mentioned earlier in the thread by TheShaz.

Edit: Okay the system/gps icon hack applied now I see the settings. Whats with "Program Port" - then different "Hardware Port"... ect... Like I said I had it running with Serial port (comm 2), what should the settings in here be since you need different ports assigned for the above mentioned?
