Background image dims

What is the reccomended pixil dimensions for background image / walpaper?

Also what file types are acceptable?

240x400 and 400x240 depending on which way your phone is flipped (portrait or landscape)

My wallpapers are 400x400 so that there is no tiling of the image when I flip the phone. JPG is fine
