Best free backup app?

So I want to clear up some space without moving to one of the cooked ROMs floating around (mostly because all of them leave something out that I want on the phone), so I'd like to do a hard reset and clear out whatever is taking up so much space (even though I'm installing to My Storage when I put in an app). I'm using the leaked ROM, and when the official one comes out, I'll probably upgrade to that one, and when someone cooks THAT one and perfects it, I'll probably upgrade to THAT one.

Problem is, with three kids and a wife who, oh, likes me to pay attention to her once in a while, I don't want to spend all of that time every time reinstalling everything and re-doing all of my settings and re-configuring all of my SPB widgets and whatnot. But....because of the aforementioned family, I also can't be shelling out more cash for backup apps. Is there a good backup app I can use so that after I hard reset (or upgrade firmware), I can restore the backup and end up with the same features and settings I had before (including Opera favorites) that is also free? Or is there an easier way?

I love this phone, btw....it's the only thing that's really putting a dent in my Palm Pre envy....

Re: Best free backup app?

I haven't found a free backup app yet. But, trust me the $20 bucks I spent on resco was well worth it.

Just so you know though, when you do upgrade it is not advisable to do a restore from your backup set for programs. PIM, e-mail, music, pictures, etc. are OK to restore. But since the programs have registry settings associated with them it won't work. In fact your backup app will scream at you that you have a different ROM installed compared to the backup set. So unfortunately, the best thing to do after a flash is to manually re-install your programs.

I know that Adryn is looking into Sashimi for his cooked ROMs. This will definitely make it easier to get all your apps back!

Sprite backup is not free but the best $29.00 i have spent on my pro. Perfect restores every time. Here is a cab file. It is a 10 day trial version.

a custom rom would probly be your best bet... what things do you consider missing bc usually if something is missing then you can put it back in with a cab

I hear what you're saying, and I may have to go that route. FYI... I don't need a PIM backup, since I have an Exchange server account.

Re: Best free backup app?

I'm using Sashimi to reinstall everything and setup my wifi and email accounts after flashing. I just finished setting it up this morning (started last night).

I used it to backup my files this morning pre-flash. Then, I just ran it after the flash and I went from the start of my backup pre-flash to having everything I like installed and setup post-flash in about 10 minutes... no lie.

The only thing I had to do after Sashimi was done is set my buttons and screen rotation prefs.
This post has been thanked 1 times.

PIMbackup is great if all you want to b/u is your PIM data (contacts, calendar, notes, tasks). If you want to b/u your entire device (i.e. registry, apps, settings) then something like SPB Backup or Resco is necessary
