But....because of the aforementioned family, I also can't be shelling out more cash for backup apps. Is there a good backup app I can use so that after I hard reset (or upgrade firmware), I can restore the backup and end up with the same features and settings I had before (including Opera favorites) that is also free? Or is there an easier way?

I love this phone, btw....it's the only thing that's really putting a dent in my Palm Pre envy....
