Updating Satellite locations for GPS

I have, hopefully, a simple question.

First, I have searched google and your forums and have been unable to find my answer.

My Telus sales rep pointed me this way for a piece of software that will update my Omnia i910 with updated Satellite locations so that when I run GPSGate it will aquire a fix faster and more reliably.

I cannot seem to locate the software that does this. Can anyone help me.

As a second question, as I am new at this, is using Google Maps with GPS Gate a good way to get simple navigation for my Omnia?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Updating Satellite locations for GPS

I've never seen any software that does this specifically. Some routing applications (Garmin Mobile XT, for example) will allow you to point to your current location on the map, which then gives the GPSr a "headstart" on figuring out your exact location (if the GPSr knows roughly where you are it will have a good idea of which satellites should be visible).

Once you've gotten your first fix, though, subsequent TTA (time to acquisition) should be much shorter.

On your second question: I don't know if you need GPSGate for navigation purposes. Google Maps will give you simple directions by itself (of course, it won't speak those directions -- you'll have to look at the display) but Google Maps is not a very effective navigation solution (unless you've got a copilot who will read you the instructions while you're driving!).

I would recommend GPSToggle. It aquires a lock and holds it in the background so that you don't have to wait aquiring a lock when you open your nav program.

I've been using GoogleMaps since I've unlocked the GPS. Right up until I bricked my phone a couple of days ago. When I get my new one I was going to try Amaze. I've heard good things about it.

Amaze is pretty good for a free program, but as I have IGO 8.3 it doesn't hold up. But for a free program amAze is great.

Re: Updating Satellite locations for GPS

Is there a way to use GPS Toggle without the traditional Today screen? I like the information about its use, and I'd like it as an option, but I have my phone set up with SPB Mobile Shell 3, using the Samsung Online Widgets as my Today screen (since most of everything I would have in a today screen is incorporated with SPB, Samsung's widgets can be useful, instead of annoying). Thoughts?

Re: Updating Satellite locations for GPS

It'd be nice to be able to use gpstoggle without the traditional today screen.... Although I could actually use it when I used SPB MS3... But that's because I didn't use the widgets. I liked having a condensed version of the Today screen that I could jump to with a couple of things on it to use a shortcuts and of course to turn on gpstoggle when needed and then jump back to MS3 leaving those programs to run in background... but I don't know of any other way to make the program work I am using 6.5 right now so I don't even have the option to turn it on and leave it in background, but now that I can customize the panels, Titanium > regular today screen

I wonder if he was thinking about a GPS almanac? I know they exist for from standalone GPSr units and it know some one on one of the forums was going to see if they could create an app that can utilize an almanac but I haven't heard about this in a while. I Must be lucky cause I've never had to wait much more then a minute for a lock....unless I'm in a warehouse surrounded my big metal trusses?

Re: Updating Satellite locations for GPS

Ok, i just had a GAY moment here.
So, i got a link for a Program that will allow you to see and change the settings for the Windows GPS Intermediate Drivers.
So, after having the CC20 update, i ran this and Change the Settings to Port 8 for Program, None for Hardware, and 57600 for BAUD from its 300. and BOOM, it work PERFECTLY with Google Maps AND Live Search. Live Search just grabbed it right away and used it when i changed the setting into it to use GPS Intermediate Drivers. It was like BOOM and it works. So i recommend doing that and the GPS will work fine. Yes, i only got between 3-5 Satellites here where my Bluetooth Adaptor would get my 8, but still, the fact i don't have to haul that around makes me happier.
Now when i am stuck in a City and don't know which way to go, this will SOOOOO help.

There is an app on my friend's Sprint Touch Diamond Pro called QuickGPS that pre-downloads satellite data, enabling a quick fix...trying to find a cab now...
