USB Charging

Hi Guys

I have a Pioneer 3100UB Car stereo with front USB. I was wondering if i can charge my Omnia from the USB.

Below is a Link to my stereo, if anyone knows where to look to see if the usb is powered, let me know please.

http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/2...0UB/index.html

Ive tried the phone in the stereo and i got nothing., My stereo can how ever pick up ipod's, mp3 players and USB flash drives and play from them.

I was wondering if it wasn't installed properly or if it just wont charge the phone,

Thanks

Re: USB Charging

I don't think it'll charge the phone. Connecting the Omnia to the computer barely charges it. If you wanna use your phone as a flash drive, Go to Settings > Connections > USB Connection > then set the USB function to Mass storage.

Re: USB Charging

yeah i know how to use it as a mass storage, and i also don't really wanna charge the phone but use the power from the car to trickle charge the phone so when i use it in the car it doesn't use the battery, i might just have to get a car charger, just was wondering if the other way would work, thanks

Re: USB Charging

I had an MP3 playing stereo in my previous car, and it would charge my 6800 (Titan) just fine. It would not, however charge my Omnia. When I got my new car, I toyed with a cigarette lighter USB adapter. It also does not charge the Omnia, so I bought a charger.

The problem I believe, is that USB specs allow for 5V, 100MA MAX on a device without specific drivers. USB drivers for specific devices tell the port on a computer how much amps to use up to 500MA (although it's shared between all ports on a hub). Dumb devices like car stereos and lighter adapters are only allowed to pump 5V, +/-100MA because they don't know what's being plugged into them.

This is why Blackberries only charge when the software has been installed on a machine (common gripe about blackberries). It needs 500ma to overcome the drain of having the phone on.

This is also why some external USB HD's use the split Y cable. The drive only uses 5v, but it needs +700MA to function correctly.

I also believe that this is why some people report USB charging is reported to work for some, and not for others. With the correct Samsung drivers installed on the PC (Shown be the recent ROM release that many people didn't have them or even know where to get them) the correct amperage is charging the Omnia fine. For those without the drivers, the trickle charge is too little to positively affect the phone while it's powered on.

My 2ยข.

Re: USB Charging

Just checked my AC Adapter... It puts out 5v, 700ma. Definitely why a generic 5V/100MA USB hub on a car stereo will not charge the phone.

Re: USB Charging

I think that the combined experience here is that the Omnia won't charge from a USB port unless either (a) the port is on a computer with the Samsung USB drivers installed, or (b) the Omnia is turned off.

Some have suggested using a cable from Boxwave that has two USB connectors -- one for charging, and for sync -- but I don't have any direct experience with that.
