How to remove unwanted apps?

How do you remove/uninstall apps that come with the phone that you don't need like visual voicemail, vzw navigator, and mobile IM? This is my first WM phone so I'm not sure how to do things like this or how to edit registry keys etc. Can someone point me towards some good info on these subjects?
