new ROM and flashing instructors?

My dad just got a hand-me-down Omnia (stock ROM). I have no experience with Samsung phones, although I've done a bit of ROM flashing on an HTC device a while back. Before I customize all the settings and load software etc. for him, I'm wondering: are cooked ROMs available for this phone? Are the custom ROMs available significantly better that the stock one, and which one might be best (is there a comparison guide)? Are there instructions somewhere for how to flash it safely?

thanks,

Mike

Yup, there's a subforum to this one:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/omnia-development/

There's a post there with a walkthrough as well. But no, I don't believe there's a comparison guide. They do tell you the changes though between the developers versions though in the posts.
