Also, steps 10 and 11 need to be swapped.
Sorry about that, I was tired when I wrote that post. I fixed that.

respectively. All the other mount options are kept by default so no need to specify them again.
Good point, I didn't even try that, I just put the full command because I know Root Explorer cannot remount, being as we have no recovery at the moment, I did not want to risk it mucking up /system. However I just tested this and it works fine.

For this, there is the "$ cat /media/bin/remount" at the end which probably all needs to be taken out. I'm not sure what it's suppose to be doing, if anything.
This stems from the tiredness and pasting too much from my windows CMD prompt. Sorry

someplace in all of that before the "/system/bin/playlogo_real" at the end so that /media will be world writable by other users than root in day to day use of the phone. This is assuming that the ext3 partition is of significant size for normal use rather than just a few megabytes to pull off everything you're accomplishing just in this post.
This is another good idea.

It's not a huge deal to pull up Better Terminal Emulator and type /media/bin/su to become root instead of using /system/bin/su in the PATH. And it also means that if /media disappears for some reason in the future, this base system command is still there in some form or fashion, even if it's mostly useless.

Otherwise, I concur.
I did this mainly to test other root applications that don't let you specify a path.

I read your blog about how to root the Samsung Moment and it said I need to understand linux and other programming in order to root my phone. Okay, I don't have that on my resume, but I am pretty saavy with a computer and a phone. Is it possible to do this without knowing any programming and just following your instructions? I just got this phone but one of the apps I loaded (overclock) says it has to be rooted in order to work and I want to run the app to save my battery and memory. Is it worth doing for that, and what other uses is being rooted good for?

Thanks for being patient with my obviously, novice questions!

Lesley

What Does Root Give Me?

Full control over your system
Ability to alter system files. You can replace many parts of the "Android Core" with this including:
Themes
Core apps (maps, calendar, clock etc)
Recovery image
Bootloader
Toolbox (linux binary that lets you execute simple linux commands like "ls") can be replaced with Busybox (slightly better option)
Boot images
Add linux binaries
Run special apps that need more control over the system
SuperUser (lets you approve or deny the use of root access to any program)
Task Manager For Root (Lets you kill apps that you otherwise could not kill)
Tether apps (like the one found at [android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com])
<there are more but I cannot think of any right now>
Backup your system
You can make a folder on your sdcard and backup all of your .apk files to your sdcard (helps if an author decides to "upgrade" you to a version that requires you to pay to use the version you just had)
Relocate your (browser/maps/market) cache to your /sdcard
Relocate your installed applications to your /sdcard
Reboot your phone from the terminal app easily (su <enter> reboot <enter>)

Re: HOW TO ROOT A SAMSUNG MOMENT Thread (help me find out)

Man...you'd be the biggest Hero since....the HERO came out because we can't do anything with this phone! It is the most crippled phone on the market for android. Some folks at samsungmomentforum.com (subforum: rooting) have been trying to figure it out but to no avail due to a great job by Samsung at locking it down. They have figured out a lot of the process. Maybe you could assist there?
