virus?

Can someone please shine some light on this subject? I'm wondering what is the point of an anti-virus for the moment. Anyone have a suggestion for the best anti-virus(free or not)?

If you go to market and type antivirus the first one is the one I use its free.

Why is it the best? What exactly do these virus scans really do? I have "antivirus" and it just scans newly installed apps and some times says this app can be bad.

no such thing as the best all av are about the same.

So do these really protect against viruses? do they only fight viruses? what about spyware and other harmful things?
